I beg to differ with one reviewer who labels Toni Fisher as a One-Hit Wonder. The L.A.-born chanteuse (1931) would have three Billboard Hot 100 entries and, by any standards, anything making those charts was indeed a hit. Her best, obviously, was 1959's The Big Hurt, written by husband Wayne Shanklin, who had previously penned such gems as Jezebel in 1951 (a Frankie Laine monster hit), Chanson d'Amour in 1958 (a hit for Art & Dotty Todd - true One-Hit Wonders), and Primrose Lane in 1959 (a hit for Jerry Wallace & The Jewels).

After forming his own label, Signet, Shankin had Toni record The Big Hurt at Goldstar Studios in Hollywood in September and by December, billed as Miss Toni Fisher, it had climbed to # 3 Hot 100 and # 16 R&B b/w Memphis Belle. It also became the first hit single to feature phasing effects on Signet 275. Her next hit didn't fare remotely as well, as the old 1932 standard How Deep Is The Ocean could only just squeak into the Hot 100 at # 93 in April 1960 b/w Blue Blue Blue on Signet 276.

And it would be two years before she had her next (and what would turn out to be her last) hit, and with another label, with a tune inspired by the Berlin Wall Crisis called West Of The Wall, but it did make the Top 40 at # 37 in the summer of 1962 b/w What Did I Do? on Big Top 3097. Apparently this same melody, but with different lyrics, was used earlier in a Signet recording called Toot Toot Amorie.

All but the last are in this excellent offering from Harkit Records of the U.K., where they have a habit of turning out the best oldies compilations. You will enjoy not only Toni's hits, but the flipsides and all the other tracks offered here as well.

Miss Toni Fisher passed away in February 1999 at the age of 67.

The liner notes make very interesting reading, and by now we all know Jimi Hendrix was totally bonkers over "The Big Hurt". Actually, it is said that the "phasing" effect on the title track was found quite by accident, but you'll have to get this disc yourself and read it. Even more thrilling is Toni's vocal pipes!! It's hard to believe all these years later, the recordings within have not lost a bit of urgency. To my ears, anyway, they are timeless. The follow-up release, "How Deep Is The Ocean" (1960) continues in "The Big Hurt" tradition, although not the sizable hit of its predecessor. Her last hit in 1962 was "West Of The Wall", which was more relative to her European constituancy. When the Berlin wall went up, friends and families were suddenly separated with the hope of one day being united. The reality of that reunion finally came during the Reagan administration when the wall was torn down. The song is done in true Euro fashion and ABBA owes great debt to a lot of its inspiration. "Fernando" in particular has similar sentiments. It should be pointed out that the two hits, "Big Hurt" and "West" was written by Toni's husband Wayne Shanklin, who also wrote "Chanson D'Amour" for Art & Dotty Todd. Here is where I rest my case. Get this disc while you can, because it's the only way you'll collect all three of Miss Fisher's hits.

In addition to her huge freak hit "The Big Hurt" and her final charted single "West Of The Wall," this compilation contains some nice renditions of standards on which Miss Fisher reminds one of Kay Starr - and that's high praise. Judging from the photos included in the excellent liner notes, Toni did not fit the slender glamour-girl image of the Peggy Lee-Julie London era, and this may have held her back (that, and some sub-standard material written by her hit-or-miss songwriting husband). If you're into 50s songbirds, this is a must-have. Sound quality is excellent.

I don't think anyone is going to think of Toni Fisher as one of the great singers of our time, but she did have one of the most unusual hits of the early 60's. Her recording of "The Big Hurt", which appears on this CD, was an engineering feat. The swooping, swishing effects were, as it turns out, a byproduct of trying to make Toni's voice sound "bigger". The effects came from trying to synchronize three mono recordings of "Hurt", but having to slow down one of the reels with a finger. But the end result made for a highly unique sound that would be difficult to replicate intentionally. That effect, plus the fact "Hurt" was a great song, made for a million-selling single.

The rest of the CD shows her range, but the only other track that was a hit for her, although not so much in the US, was "West Of The Wall". This song lamented the plight of two lovers separated by the Berlin Wall.

This CD is a good overview of Toni Fisher's career. She certainly had what it took to become a much better known artist than she was. My only question to the folks who put this disc out is why they included a photo on the back cover that looks like she's about to bite someone's head off. There would have had to be some more flattering shots of Toni that would have been better than this one.

This disc contains all of Miss Toni Fisher's known recordings. A very competent singer with a style very much like Kay Starr, but not as jazz-oriented.
