...A person with dwarfism, Dunn sends a message to make all of us proud--that difference is not something on which we or anyone around us should dwell. Rather, it is one unique aspect of our lives contributing to the story of who we are. --Gary Arnold, Vice President of Public Relations, Little People of America

...Mr. Dunn's life is a lesson that I hope all aspiring performers take to heart. --Stephen Di Benedetto, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Theatre History & Theory, The University of Miami

Sometimes you find books on the shelf, and sometimes by a recommendation. This time, I discovered the author. Sherry Kelly with her husband Don had been told by a friend to try selling her book at a science fiction convention. They came into the dealer room, looking for their table, which was directly across the aisle from mine. They came well prepared, with a projector to show photos from the book and various visual aides. It didn't take me long to get caught up into their story.

The Big Life of a Little Man is the biography of the famous dwarf actor Michael Dunn who I remember from the Wild, Wild West television show as Dr. Loveless. He was also Sherry Kelly's cousin and her depth of research included 175 footnotes, and that doesn't count all the little remembrances I heard across the aisle over the course of the weekend. So by Saturday, I was intrigued enough to buy a copy for myself.

It's now Monday, after reading the whole book through in one sitting. It's an engrossing tale, not only of an actor I remembered from back when, but also a engaging story of the other side of that life, his family. Sherry includes many quotes from letters and stories from Michael Dunn himself as well as from a family that had gone the extra mile to raise a child with physical problems into a man with a full life that stamped his own imprint onto the world.

To be honest, I'm not a huge reader of biographies, so I can only review this book as a tale, a story of emotion, struggles, victories and defeats. Like I said. I read it in one sitting, it carries a strong narrative, and with enough details about the man behind the actor that I really need to put the Wild, Wild West DVD's and the movie Ship of Fools on my viewing list.

My only complaint for this book is that there wasn't more text....it has some great family photos of Mr. Dunn with his family. It's written with love and support by his cousin, and I applaud her for publishing this. I grew up with Wild Wild West, and my sister and I adored Dr. Loveless. We had taped a marathon w/all the episodes of Dr. Loveless, and as I was watching for the 30th time (smile), I'd wondered if there was a book about Mr. Dunn. So, I found this on Amazon and had to get it. It's a wonderful tribute to this fantastic actor, and I encourage everyone to purchase it.

The Big Life of a Little ManMichael Dunn's (Gary Miller) acting accomplishments on the hit 1960's TV series Wild Wild West was my first real chance to see this actor in action (Like Conrad he generally did all his own stunts). His roll as Dr. Miguelito Loveless provided the viewer with a villain you could both like and admire. Some of his inventions were amazing and I always felt that if only the politicians would stay out of his way, Dunn's character might come around and help humanity. His musical duets with Phoebe Dorin were both special and charming. But this was only a TV Series. During the 60's he was popping up on a number of shows and appearances and I got to see him sing.

It wasn't until I read his biography written by his first cousin Sherry Kelly that I started searching for other films that he starred in i.e. "Ship of Fools" with Lee Marvin. One recent film Man in the Mirror with Martin Sheen (filmed in 1971 but just released in 2006) Dunn has the starring roll. Michael plays a college professor who gives up his career to sell apples on the streets of NY City during the 70's. Just the footage of NY is well worth the purchase. The story about this film is interesting in itself.

Sherry Kelly's book about her cousin gives a personal touch to Michael Dunn. Much of the information comes from Gary's mother's journals and family.
He was generally always in pain yet he accomplished so much in his not so long life. It shows us less of his acting career though it is certainly included and more about the man who stood only 3' 10" tall, but accomplished more than some one twice his size. Personally I would have enjoyed seeing this book much larger with color images and more backlot info from fellow actors, however trying to find actors for interviews could take forever.

I couldn't put the book down until it was Dunn.

I first saw Michael Dunn on the Jack Paar Show -- not the talk show at late night, but his primetime show. Mr. Paar gave Michael Dunn a long, complimentary introduction. He sang, and I was blown away and became an immediate fan always interested in him.

I only recently found out about this book and I hope it starts being a best seller. It is written by a close relative who writes lovingly about this great person and entertainer who died too young.

If you are on Facebook, I would like to invite you to join a newly formed The Michael Dunn Tribute Page of which Sherry Kelly is a friend.

More About the Author

Author Sherry Kelly is devoted to God and family, and she has always held a special love for children, nature and animals. While attending college in Illinois, she worked at an animal preserve feeding and caring for a variety of wildlife. While raising her family she took care of foster babies in her home and is now a retired Parent Educator.

Sherry has penned three exceptional and very different books. The writing of her first book, A Cat Named Zooby, was unplanned and began as a therapeutic way of dealing with the trauma of Zooby's horrible garage door accident. She was keeping a scrapbook journal about the experience and when it was completed, it was a book. After it became published, Sherry was encouraged to go back and write the parenting book that she had envisioned and written an outline for years earlier while working as a parent educator. The book is titled Your New Baby's Instruction Book, and is the ideal gift for expectant parents or parents of newborns. Finally babies can come with instructions! Her riveting third book, The Big Life of a Little Man: Michael Dunn Remembered, is a story Sherry thought was just waiting to be told. It is about the amazing life lived by her first cousin who was the famous little person actor in the 70s and 80s.

Sherry and her husband, Don, live in Yukon, Oklahoma. They have three adult children, eight grandchildren, one great-grandson, and a cat named Zooby.
