The writer seems to feel that the only way we can get them to write well is to shield them from the actual basics of grammar.

Re: Grammar, this is the book to get. Well Written and to the point, not a waste of verbiage like many.

The content is decent and the explanations are easy to follow. Having examples to illustrate a grammar rule is good, but the author goes overboard. There is no need to repeat the same explanation over and over; the approach may work in a classroom setting, but the nearly identical paragraphs repeated multiple times diminish the value that I get from reading the book. The faster-pace appendix suits me better.

I have heard the author interviewed on the radio and really enjoyed it. This book is great for a refresher course on grammar and for quick help when I am not certain of useage. If you need a book to polish up your grammar this is it.

This is an excellent quickie course on the most common (and, to the grammar geek, most annoying) grammatical mistakes. Although a little repetitive to hammer the point across, it explains the errors and how to fix them in clear, nontechnical language. I would have liked the use of a few basic grammatical terms (such as "direct object"), but that's a personal quirk. And although I'm an obsessive editor and nitpicker myself, I did discover that I (together with 99% of English speakers) seem to have been making one minor error all my life. Oh well!

If you've forgotten what Sister Katherine taught you (often with the helpful use of a ruler on the back of your knuckles when you made a mistake) back in grade school, this book can painlessly help you remember. Though it gets a little repetitive at times in the attempt to re-install the information in your brain, it has all the basic tools to jog your memory and help you with your own writing.

I really love "The Big Ten of Grammar"! It summed up all the common sticking points and gave their solutions in clear, concise, and informative terms. I wish I had had this book in High School English class. My writing is already improving and Mr. Bradshaw answered some questions that have plagued me for a long time (farther vs. further for example). A must have for writers who want to be better (especially if they don't have an editor).
