Review

“The Book of Cats comes a year after The Big New Yorker Book of Dogs—a publishing slight that, though it stings, I’ll forgive, as the latest anthology was worth the wait. . . . Two standout articles feature real-life obsessives of ages past who reveal today’s Caturnet devotees—with their GIFs and Tumblrs and hastily aggregated listicles—for what they truly are: amateurs. . . . Eat your heart out, Cute Overload.”The New York Times Book Review

“A beautiful hardcover.”—Jenny McCarthy, People

“This irresistible anthology of articles, poems, essays, fiction, cartoons, and covers pulled from the New Yorker is a veritable treasure trove for cat lovers. Just dive right in; with stories from the likes of John Updike, Maeve Brennan, Roald Dalhl, and Haruki Murakami interwoven with hilariously wry cartoons, one can’t help but be enthralled. A must-have.”Modern Cat

“A shiny, well-fed tome . . . The anthology embodies the cat’s defining characteristic: its cluster of opposites, rolled together into a giant hairball of cultural attitudes—something, perhaps, at once uncomfortably and assuringly reflective of our own chronically conflicted selves.”Brain Pickings

“This gorgeous book has earned a permanent spot on my coffee table. It is an absolute joy to read and browse through, and I know it will bring me hours and hours of pleasure for years to come. And it makes a purr-fect gift for the special cat lovers in your life.”The Conscious Cat

“[A] sumptuous volume.”The Dallas Morning News

“One need not own cats (or do cats own their owners?) or even be a pet lover to savor this feline-focused offering.”The Sacramento Bee

“[A] fun collection of short stories, articles, humor, poems, and charming color covers from the magazine’s archives . . . [a] high-quality, attractive work.”Library Journal

“Covers, cartoons, authors of pieces both longer and shorter, reflect current views of the feline subject in all its glory. . . . The quality, humor and variety make for another successful New Yorker collection.”Kirkus Reviews

“An eminently giftable anthology.”Publishers Weekly

This is NOT a book for cat lovers. Sure, a small number of cartoons and covers are included, but too many of the essays are horrible. I browsed through the book, reading essays at random and almost every essay that I read had cruel things happening to cats. The essay by Sylvia Ashton-Warner looked promising until the shocking end, which left a disgusting image in my head that I'm still trying to shake. E.B. White gives tips on how to kill cats, as do other essayists. I expected upbeat stories, like the one by Brendan Gill. But after stumbling upon so many horrors, I was afraid to read any more. Don't even think about gifting this book to a cat lover!

The stories in this book are horrible. I read about four picked from topics I thought would be interesting. They were terrible! There were other stories that showed a hatred of cats. What are they doing in a book that is supposed to be in favor of cats? Read the introduction. Can you get through that? That should have been a clue to me as I could not. Yes, some of the cartoons are funny, and it was nice seeing the pictures of the magazine covers that had cats in them. But all that in between! Horrible. There must be a better way to see the cover pages. Is there an interesting story in the book? I do not know as I am unwilling to read another potential - in my experience, 100% - horrible story. I had purchased this as a gift for my wife. She agrees that this book is horrible. We would both give it a no-star but that is not available.

I personally do not see anything funny or humerous about drowning kittens in a bucket of water or asking neighbors to shoot cats or throwing cats in bonfires....I thought the book was awful especially to a cat lover or to anyone who loves animals....

I bought two copies to give, sight unseen, to my cat-loving adult daughters. I trust the New Yorker! If I had seen it first, I would have given the older book of cat cartoons.

As I thought it would be, it is a riot. The cartoons and essays are on point for all cat lovers. I was going to immediately send copies to friends and relatives until I found out the price increased over a dollar in 24 hours. Strange how this could/would happen. Did I miss some subtle change in the corporate bottom line that mandated this price increase? Anyhow, I highly recommend the book but have a problem with the price.

What a treasure - I had to first page through and laugh at all the cartoons and I haven't stopped laughing. Then I picked out a few interesting stories and soon realized ALL of the stories were interesting, funny, sad, cute and sooo true. This compilation is one of the best 'coffee table' books around, good for a quick read and a hunker down and get warm fuzzies read on a cold night, with your cat trying to get as close to your face as possible blocking the pages from view. Sheer joy and love.

This is a wonderful book. However, it is not the kind of book you pick up and read cover to cover. It is a book to savor. Be it one story at a time; a quick look at some old New Yorker covers featuring cats. Pick a poem or two. Find an author you admire, and find out what he or she has to say about cats. A person could spend five minutes enjoying whatever strikes their fancy at the moment. Or, one could spend five hours reading in depth, several selections in one sitting. One could read this book from front to back in the traditional way, but that would take some of the fun out of it. However one chooses to read this large vokume, I guarantee they will find it enjoyable. If you're a "cat person" this is a must have for your library. But, don't put it on a shelf. Place it where it can easily be picked up and enjoyed for a few minutes or a few hours.. Also, its beautiful cover is just too nice to be shelved. It needs, and wants, to be visible. Everyone who enters your home will be impressed. I have six cats, so this was a "must have" for me. I can find something about each of my cats, past and present, in this book. There are even some pieces written for those who do not like cats!
