Book Description

This newly revised and expanded edition of The Bill of Rights in Modern America captures the contentious national debate about the nature and extent of our individual rights. Free speech, the separation of church and state, public safety and gun control, property rights, the rights of criminals and victims, the limits of law enforcement, the death penalty, affirmative action, the right to privacy, abortion, states' rights--the Bill of Rights has been evoked as the legal basis for every one of these issues. Twelve distinguished legal scholars discuss the history of and the current debates on these and other important rights issues in a book that is certain to stimulate thoughtful discussion among all citizens.

5.0 out of 5 stars Knowledgeably compiled and expertly edited October 9, 2008
Format:Paperback
How much does the Bill of Rights really mean to the United States? Now in a fully revised and significantly expanded second edition, "The Bill of Rights in Modern America" is a critical examination of the bill of rights and what exactly it all means to modern American society. Aimed at a general audience, it's easily accessible to non-specialist general readers and offers much food for thought of how many contemporary political debates involve or dis-involve something our very country is built on. Knowledgeably compiled and expertly edited by the team of David J. Bodenhamer and James W. Ely, "The Bill of Rights in Modern America" is a great centerpiece for discussion for any group.
