This book is probably the greatest single reference for the modern popular music fan. The last edition of "Top 40 Hits" that I owned only covered up to 1990, and it was around 600 pages long. This new edition goes all the way up to 2009 and it's huge---900 pages---almost a third longer. I have been without one of these Whitburn "Top 40" references for a while and I had forgotten how much I missed having it as a music listening tool. With this book you can identify your favorite top 40 hit record (from 2009 back to 1955) when you hear it on the radio, or just look up your favorite song titles to see when they were hits, and learn their peak chart position. Or you can see just how many of your favorite band or artist's songs made it to Top 40 hit status. The thoroughness of Whitburn's research is unbelievable! In this latest edition there is still trivia about many of the bands and artists including listings of many bandmembers and their previous and subsequent musical involvement. And in the hands of a skilled music programmer, this book is a powerful programming tool. So it is both entertaining and useful. I guess it's all a matter of perspective, but since I received my copy it has never been up on the shelf. It is out on the table, and used almost constantly. This was some of the best reference book money I have spent in a long time.

Bought this on way to airport for a two hour flight and use while visiting folks in a distant city, to avoid the weight and size in my luggage of the print version I already owned. Someone needs to fix the formatting to more closely match the printed book, because the Kindle version uses 6 or 7 lines to show information which consumes 2 or 3 lines in the print version. The information is very good and valuable but the formatting of the Kindle version should be redone.

let's face it, between the changes in the chart-data accumulation and the teen interns that seem to be choosing the editorials (not to mention the blasphemous new logo), Billboard has jumped the shark. I never thought it'd happen...until it did.
This book, like the last edition, also fails to provide the fun pictures of some of the singles listed within (some of which were very rare and exclusive to the promotional singles). They used to be an added bonus/highlight of these books but have gone missing.
That being said, this book serves as the ultimate reference book for quick information regarding songs/artists and their songs/positions/dates. I always have it within arm's reach...even in this online search engine age.
Seems like popular music has taken almost as downward a spiral as billboard magazine, so whether or not i'll purchase the 10th Edition will have to be decided at that time.

Music lovers will definitely find this book a "must-have". As you flip through the pages, you will get to remember that long-forgotten song you used to listen back in the day, how popular it was and when it reached its peak position at the Billboard's top 40. The book is essentially organized by artist and their chart achievements, but there are also smaller sections where song titles are organized alphabetically (with its peak position and year), #1 songs by year (and # of weeks at the position) and artist rankings based on chart performance. So all that means that regardless of your research criteria, you will probably find this book friendly and easy to navigate. It's been great not only to read, but also to build my music library organized by dates and discover "new" old songs I've never paid attention to. If you subscribe to one of these streaming services and plan to build an entirely different playlist to share and enjoy, this book might be of great help.

After being a local DJ for over 25 years, I've always relied on Joel Whitburn's reference books to locate hard to find information on older top 40 hits that you just don't hear much anymore. Joel relies on the info from Billboard's charts & then when I'm ready to purchase a new up-to-date edition, I've found the place to contact & that's Amazon.com ! Everytime I check with them they have what I'm looking for, in stock @ the best price. Their shipping rates are reasonable & I get my order in a incredible fast time! Why waste your time looking anywhere else? For me, it's Amazon.com everytime! One other thing, Amazon.com has a great selection of other editions for those people that may be looking for a different need.

An excellent and valuable reference for musicians, DJs, record collectors and music enthusiasts. It is also just fun to read for anyone who just likes popular music. It is full of surprises like the fact that rock music icon Jimi Hendrix only had one song that made it to the Top 40. His cover of Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower" climbed up to #20 in 1968. That seems unbelievable especially when it is contrasted with the facts that the actor Patrick Swayze had a hit that climbed to #3 or that Alvin and the Chipmunks have over a half dozen Top 40 hits with three that climbed higher than Jimi Hendrix's.
