Editorial Reviews

Review

It's a beautiful book, wonderfully written, that is essential for Spurs fans and deserves to be widely read because it is about perspective, culture and identity, precious to fans everywhere yet under attack. Read it and I defy you tell me that finishing fourth in the Premier League is what truly matters. When Saturday Comes

At the outset I must declare an interest, a triple interest really. I liked Julie Welch from the moment I saw on television her "Those Glory Glory Days" a factional account of her love for Tottenham Hotspur and Danny Blanchflower in particular. Secondly I enjoyed her reports on matches in The Observer. Thirdly I am related to one of the boys who started Tottenham Hotspur in 1882, when he was a mere 12 years old. So I am disappointed to some extent with the history prior to World War II, and also the reliance on quotes from blokes in pubs, otherwise known as fans. The stated facts areoften just what someone tells her. Anecdotal. The style is extremely easy to read and chatty, and the factual matter comes alive when Julie does, i.e. post WWII. Do I want it to be a hard to read history? Not for a moment, but the reliance on peoples views is too great. There are mistakes which I suspect are editorial, but gross. Inside the flyleaf first line "In 1892 three schoolboys...", no, 1882 and more than 3 schoolboys. There are only 2 pictures of pre WWII matters, one an illustration of 1901 FA Cup Final wrongly stated to be against Sheffield Wednesday (should be United). No photographs of early teams, quite a few of recent players. No mention of "Spurs" a history of the Club written by Julian Holland in 1956, which is certainly the biography of the Club up until that time, which suggests she did not read it or rely on it, which makes for a loss for the book in the early stages. Therefore I do not consider it correct to call it "The biography of Tottenham Hotspur", the indefinite article would be far more appropriate. But readable, extremely readable.

This was a gift for my son, a huge fan and ardent follower of the spurs. He was pleased with the book.
