Editorial Reviews

2014 release, the debut album from the Alt-Rock band formed by The Foo Fighters' Taylor Hawkins alongside Wiley Hodgden (bass, background vocals), and Mick Murphy (guitar). For anyone asking who/what/why are The Birds Of The Satan... The question is answered in short order by the album's opening manifesto, the near-10-minute "The Ballad of the Birds of Satan," which progresses from a typically frenetic Hawkins drum salvo into an outright heavy-prog epic concluding with an undeniable boogie groove. Elsewhere, sublime ballads "Raspberries" and the somber finale' "Too Far Gone To See" showcase additional emotional dimensions of The Birds Of Satan sound-and if that gets too heavy, the listener can always skip back to "Wait Til Tomorrow" for the first documented recorded Van Halen style guitar solo of this decade. Guest musicians on the eponymous album include Dave Grohl (guitar), Pat Smear (guitar), Drew Hester (percussion), and Rami Jaffee (keyboards), among others. The Birds Of Satan was produced and engineered by John Lousteau and mixed by Drew Hester.

When I have an XXL bag of M&Ms, I just can't stop eating them because they are SO addictive? No matter how hard I try to NOT dip my hand in the bag I find myself going back and getting more all day long until the bag is empty... it's dangerous. Well, The Birds Of Satan are the musical version of these delicious candies!!! Over the last 2 days since getting the cd I have listened to it 6 times and still can't get my fill. Good thing there's no calories with each listen (unlike the endless handful of M&Ms) !!! Imagine if Queen & the Foo Fighters had a baby that came right out of the womb kicking butt and rockin' hard and creating great harmonies... that's what you get with TBoS. A perfect blend of the timeless classic rock vibe and groove that will keep it fresh 40 years from now, combined with hooks big enough to catch a great white shark... you can't go wrong. Taylor Hawkins vocals are amazing, emotional at times, and always from the gut and heart. Each song has a different feel, cool tempo changes, and monster grooves. The only complaint I would have... I WANT MORE!!!! I'm addicted so much, I even ordered the vinyl for my collection. A must have album.

This is one of the best records I've heard in a long time. Each song has a surprise around every bend in the notes. Equally danceable and prog-like in parts, there is simply not a weak cut on this. Taylor sings and drums his ass off and his band mates are all deep in the pocket here. Taylor's voice is amazing and sounds a bit different on every cut. If you like your music predictable and safe, do not get this cd. But if you want challenging, complex, yet eminently listenable music with great riffs, vocals and interesting textures, this is for you. And a note to a previous reviewer: Who cares what Taylor's hair looks like? He's a musician, not a model.

California debut from members of Foo Fighters & Chevy Metal—eclectic hard rock/metal with a
70s art/prog feel and some ripping lead guitar riffs. Driving, crunchy-chord rhythms give way to
wide-ranging, theatrical interludes and flashing heavy metal fretwork. The drama quotient and
sense of over-the-top fun are on an equal par with the cranked-up roar of rock ‘n’ roll power. You
get a sense that the band wears open-necked shirts & tight leather pants, and struts their guitar
strum with a hair-in-the-air, wide-legged stance. Similarities to the Darkness, Jane’s Addiction,
Queen, Van Halen, Queens of the Stone Age, Lord Fowl. It’s a light-hearted, heavy-handed, big-
hair, air-guitar good time!

I was never impressed with Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders first debut album, but Red Light Fever, their second album is one of my all-time favorite albums just to sit and play all of the way through. This rocks a little harder, but it still has that great quality of a Hawkins album. I'm impressed. I hope to see more from Taylor and his buddies soon.
Rock on!
