Book Description

"The Black Witch was a page turner; it had me in its clutches and didn't let go until the end. The book is such a well written horror tale that's full of action and mayhem, completely engrossing. Character development is outstanding, they are so well written the reader cares about all of the main characters; they are so richly fleshed out. I highly recommend this novel."
- Review by Michael Juvinall, Staff Writer, Dark River Press

The Black Witch is a profile in courage for those facing the uncertainty of death at the hands of pure evil. Set on the high seas in a vivid tale of desperation the characters come to life in this epic sea adventure.

It was said to be the sailing adventure of a lifetime. In an obscure marina in Maryland the Coe family discovered the schooner of their dreams. Reported dismantled off the coast of Australia the Black Witch returned from the dead. A naval architect and his friends gathered in May of 1935 and sailed the most unique schooner ever built.
The words of the former owners and their captains written in the ship’s logs warned of a cursed ship. Disregarding the words of men of integrity the passengers and crew sailed the Black Witch into the murderous realms of illusion.

With madness plaguing Dorian Coe the command of the schooner was turned over to the first officer, William Barmer. Through the trials of battling a demon from the bottomless pits of hell, a ferocious storm at sea, and the escape from a treacherous island, William fought for the life of everyone on board. From the listing deck of a sinking ship their only salvation is the miracle of divine intervention. To lose your life aboard the Black Witch was to lose your soul. In the final round William and a small handful of survivors learn the end is merely a beginning.

The brogue of the Outer Banks of North Carolina brings the flavor of the sea throughout the turn of every page. It is a lesson of man’s will to survive against formidable odds. The Black Witch brings you horror, mystery, murder, and the dangers of the supernatural world in a page turning volume of dark fantasy suspense.

Editorial Reviews

Review

The story is in some ways reminiscent of Harlan Ellison's horror/sf classic "I have no mouth and I must scream," and in other ways, Stephen King's "Christine."

5.0 out of 5 stars An Enchantingly Evil Sea Tale September 22, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The world of independent books is full of sea wreaks, but Michael Rivers' book The Black Witch (Curse of the Black Witch) is definitely not one of them. A fan of old fashion high seas adventures, I gladly stepped abroad and wasn't disappointed.

As a child, I grew up on the shores where the Black Witch first casts spell upon Dorian Coe and Gale Ritchie, her new and soon doomed owners. Stories of ships were abundant growing up, but none were as captivating as this tale. It takes you back to the days when the Eastern Shore of the U.S. was filled with seafaring men prior WWII. Days when sailing ships were still prominent on water. The descriptions of the schooner and her workings allow the reader to join the crew. They aren't trite or superficial, instead they help transport one to the ship and even teach you.

Rivers brings you gently into the supernatural aspects of his novel. You first fall in love with the characters and their love for the Black Witch. Slowly as things abroad the schooner turn tragically wrong and it becomes clear that it isn't the result the two ego infused owners. That is where the true tale begins.

There are times when I did feel like I had been set adrift, lost in the dreams of the tormented, Rivers, however, eventually came to my rescue and I continued to the end. If only the crew of the Black Witch had been as lucky. To quote from one of my favorite lines from the book: "she holds you like a whore in the night, but she'll take your soul and not think twice."

5.0 out of 5 stars Would you sell your soul? October 23, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
How far would you go to live the dream of a lifetime? Dorian Coe, Micheal Rivers' main character, was willing to go as far as necessary.

Do you believe in ghosts? The Devil? Rivers' created powerful and believable characters who sailed the Black Witch to the depths of despair and beyond. They were not all human. The Black Witch had me reaching out to touch something real more than once. Balasco will scare you to the tips of your toes! Is he real or not?

You'll shake your head in disgust at the lengths we humans will go to "have it all." Does good win over evil? Not always. The Black Witch picks and chooses who wins and who loses. Rivers casts a spell that lingers long after the last page.

P.S. If you have to go outside after dark, take a flashlight, a BIG one! Great read, highly recommended! Thanks, Micheal, for your spooky tale. I look forward to more.

5.0 out of 5 stars DO NOT read before bedtime!!! September 9, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I don't joke when I say that reading this before going to sleep is not advisable, because not only will it keep you up, but it will not make whatever sleep you get restful. Micheal Rivers knows how to pull a person in, and knows how to leave an impression. This story haunted me for at least a week before I was able to get anything resembling sleep!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best I read this summer! September 19, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is one of the best novels I have read all summer. While I'm reading a book, I always keep a notebook handy so I can write down lines I particularly like. I would like to list four I loved from "The Black Witch":
1. The wonders and mystery of the Black Witch wound through their imaginations conjuring dreams of fortune, fame, and the glory of sailing the high seas once more.
2. She holds you like a whore in the night, but she'll take your soul and not think twice.
3. They were playing a dangerous game with an entity that was unfamiliar to anyone in the room.
4. So exquisitley perfect was the darkness of the heavens above that one would have difficulty believing it was a prison to the passengers and crew of the Black Witch.

This was a non-stop action novel. I absolutely loved the end. Like another said in her review, would be great if Micheal Rivers were to write a sequel to this novel. Even a series of books could be written, continuing on with the horror and unpredictability of Dorian Coe.
I look forward to reading all of Micheal Rivers' novels. He has a great imagination and a style of writing I love.

5.0 out of 5 stars Creepy Without Being Revolting November 6, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
What a brilliant surprise! The story revolves around a black ship and the people who must have her. It had just the right amount of creepy; enough to make me watch the shadows, but be able to turn out the lights. The characters struggled with their dark sides enough to make me inspect mine.

About halfway through the book I was happy to find I couldn't put it down. I read a lot of indie books and there have been only a handful that stoked the page turning passion.

Many of my favorite book elements were at play here: I love ocean adventures, a good mystery, tales of old schooners, ghosts, tragedy, suspense and relationship drama.

My only complaint is that I wonder what the characters looked like.

I recommend this book and will read other by the same author.

5.0 out of 5 stars ahoy! March 12, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I want to start off by saying I know nothing at all about schooners. I have never been on one, and I think the closest thing would be a canoe! Having said that, I loved this book!

The pacing was fast and I was constantly wondering what would happen next. Even with all the books I've read over the years, I wasn't able to guess at what was coming, nor was I at any point bored. There didn't seem to be a slow spot anywhere in the story! Even the ending took me by surprise! I expected something unusual, and I was not disappointed! It was like a roller coaster with all kinds of twists and turns, even a couple of hanging upside down moments!

The characters were well thought out, and all were quite different. I was never sure what surprises they had in store for me. Even the background characters were well developed and had dimension.

All that said, I'd recommend this book to anyone!
