Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

Do you like setting your opponent problems from the very first move?

Are you happy to roll the dice and take some risks?

Then enter the intriguing world of the Blackmar-Diemer Gambit!

The Blackmar-Diemer Gambit is a dangerous attacking opening which has amassed a cult following – a loyal band of supporters like no other in chess. White sacrifices a pawn in return for a strong initiative which tests Black’s defensive capabilities to the limit. Some experts have questioned its objective soundness but there’s no doubting its effectiveness over the board, where pressure and a ticking clock often mean it’s impossible to find the right defence.

In this book, Christoph Scheerer takes a modern-day look at the gambit. He examines in detail the most promising lines for White and the most resilient defences for Black, discusses the key ideas for both sides and highlights the many traps awaiting the unsuspecting player.

  • Up-to-date coverage of the key lines
  • Packed with original ideas and analysis
  • Ideal for club and tournament players

I really bought this book to find a gambit line to supplement my love for d4 openings and got more than I bargained for in a gambit line. The Blackmar-Deimer Gambit is not for wimps! Most players will either love or hate this gambit....from both sides of the board! This is a THICK book from Everyman and detailed with 13 chapters covering the author's recommended/alternative lines for both offense and defense. There is also plenty to digest if Black decides against accepting the offered pawn. Many choices and lines to play, as only a true gambit offers! Overall book is great quality/strong binding with this layout: the opening moves are given in BOLD font with sub-variations as necessary distinguished by a), b), c) etc....the key moves are delineated by bold font in gray boxes then BOLD font with sub-variations as stated before. You get the most thorough information at a decent price for a paperback...If you want to study/play this gambit, this is the perfect book for you. I can't say anymore....

This is another quality book from Everyman, with very high production values. The author has done a very thorough job covering this opening, resulting in the best book I have seen on the BDG. Many game quotations are from the last 5-10 years, including at least one game from as recently as 2009. But I have to point out one important oversight. Although the bibilography lists about 50 sources, one source that is not listed is "The Blackmar-Diebert Gambit", by one of the world's foremost experts on this opening, Charles Diebert. Diebert achieved a peak USCF rating of 2396, while playing the BDG almost exclusively as white. I was disappointed that I have been unable to find any of his games quoted in the book. Recommended, nonetheless.

Update to review: On further reading, I have come across some game quotations from Diebert's games, even if his book was not used as a source.

Fantastic book for those interested in the BDG. Covers accepted and declined. Wish they would make a PGN formatted version.

Absolutely the best book ever written on the Blackmar Deimer Gambit with lines covered in great detail. Much better than the previous books by Tim Sawyer and Gary Lane. If you want a book that objectively covers the gambit from both the black and white sides, this book is a must!
