Bought this to do as a project with my 5-yr old son, thinking that it should be within my technical abilities, and thankfully it was :)
The packaging is great, everything contained neatly in a hardcover book with resealable parts storage. The instructions are very clear yet fun, thanks to the comics style.
Putting everything together was easy and fun. Reading through the book, assembling two bugs, and explaining basic electricity concepts took about an hour, with a lot of easier steps that even a 5-yr-old can help with. I think a 10-yr-old could easily do it by himself/herself.
My son was thrilled with the result, see attached customer pic. He made the black with red eyes scary vampire one, and I made the not-scary-at-all orange looser who apparently is gonna get its butt kicked by the vampire one, or so he says...

Hi,
I am the lucky parent of a kid who is very curious and just loves to create things. Recently he read about diodes, and at school he was building electrical circuits. When I read the description of the Blinkybugs I just knew it would be a perfect fit for him. I was right. My eleven year old spend two days absorbed in the kit and was very proud of his creations. He then went on to explain to me in great details how diode's physical design leads to their specific colour. A great gift for a young mind with scientific curiosity.
Many thanks,
Greenbi

I picked up Blinkybugs from the Maker Faire in 2009 - they were super fun to assemble - perfect for a project with kids. It's great they are now available in a completely self-contained format with cool cartoon instructions and a bunch of extra decorations and bling to choose from during assembly.

I purchased this for my 9yr old and 6yr old. The directions are made like comic book instructions and a lot of reading. I feel these are a bit more complicated to create than the value of WOW on them once created. I wouldn't purchase again.

I was hoping that this would be something that my child could primarily put together, but I had to help him quite a bit to put together. Still all in all, it is a fun activity and worth purchasing if you are aware it will require some work

Fun book at a great price! The "bugs" you make are pretty fun cause the lights/eyes flash and blink when you blow on the antennas or if you move them around. Great fun project and gift!
