Book Description

Mercenary pilot and adventurer Susan "Tsunami" Powell is hired to covertly retrieve data from a world about to be destroyed by its own moon. No problem -- there's only a blockade, a ruthless alien bio-arms wrangler, and a swarm of planet-eating bugs to deal with first.

The Blockade Run is a short story set in a time when hubris and betrayal have brought down the mighty Human Imperiate, plunging the Orion Arm of the Milky Way into chaos, creating innumerable opportunities for the galaxy's less reputable denizens.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not enough explanation. February 23, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I picked this up on a whim because it was a) cheap and b) appealed to my love of military science fiction.

What we have here is a short story concerning a brief adventure of the protagonist, Susan "Tsunami" Nakamura. The biggest problem with the story is that half the time, it's not really clear what's going on- we know that Tsunami and her crew are...I don't know, defending a bigger ship and then dropping some cargo off on a planet. Making her a mercenary at least deals with the "why" of the situation: for money, dear boy. The story is mostly action- there's little in the way of science in this sci-fi, and I'm OK with that, but it comes off as chaotic. And like I said, it's not easy to understand what's going on.

Also, I found it a little off-putting that we're given a few alien races that I guess we're supposed to know about right off the bat.

Now, if I was reading Star Trek fluff I could be expected to know what a Vulcan, Andorian or Borg is; however, for a story that seems intended to serve as an introduction to these characters and aliens, we don't get much on them. The story features the characters being snarky, and not a whole lot else. I say skip this one, and download one of the free Andre Norton stories instead.

This excerpt makes me want to look for more of the story. It was much better than I expected from a short story.

So long as you go into reading THE BLOCKADE RUN by J.I. Greco with the right expectations, you're likely to have a good time. It's a short-story so it is, well, short. There's not a great deal of character development, back-story, or context for the actions/events that take place.

What you will find is a small cast of entertaining characters, fun dialogue, and slightly zany situations.
If you're a science fiction fan looking for a good, light-hearted story to pass an hour or so of time with, this is a great choice.

4.0 out of 5 stars A quick, funny detour from reality January 2, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
J.I. Greco's short story Blockade Run is a light and funny diversion. The characters are humorous and the story is quick, but good. I hope that the author will do more with this in the future, as I think we've yet to see the rest of the story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Humor is never bad to me. October 8, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I simply enjoyed the book because it seemed like the author was having fun when it was written. I'm the perfect reader for work like this, as i'm the type of person who still laughs at fart scenes in movies. To put it another way...i listen to most of my books now since I spend at least an hour and a half driving every day, and upon reading this i immediately tried to find something by this author on audio format from my usual listening post. Didn't find anything but that just means i'll have to pick up the books and read them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tsunami Rocks! January 25, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
If you like strong kick-ass female characters, you need to read this. If you like the Retief stories by Keith Laumer, you need to read this. If you like sci-fi adventure with attitude, or wildly imaginative aliens, or great characters, or great stories that deftly blend action, humor, and intricately created worlds... then, seriously... you need to read this. There are a handful of writers who I feel compelled to read everything they write. J.I. Greco has become one of those authors -- and this was the story that put him very high on that list.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark comedy, scoundrel character April 5, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Enjoyed the exploits of a true scoundrel. You have to like a lady who plans ahead and gets what she wants. Dark comedic moments. Would like a longer story with other adventures.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not even remotely believable
Terrible character development, bad physics, videogame-like combat (including the nonchalant attitudes of the combatants). Probably exciting for a kid to read, but not much else.
