Book Description

“I immensely enjoyed The Blue Monster. Mike Roche knows the world he writes about. His will be a strong new voice in crime fiction.” Michael Connelly, N.Y. Times bestselling author of the Lincoln Lawyer and Harry Bosch novels.

“The Blue Monster is a solid crime novel by newcomer Mike Roche. It’s filled with authentic dialogue and scenes that make the reader feel like they’re right there. Roche delivers the goods.” Jim Swain, bestselling author of the Tony Valentine series.

For Tampa Detective Kate Alexander, a call to the murder scene of a teenage girl rips at her heart. The killer is free due to an acquittal by Judge Judith Levy. In revenge of that verdict, the judge’s family is now the hunted. A seemingly isolated double homicide at a cheap motel leads Kate Alexander to focus on a psychotic and deranged suspect. In a cat and mouse game, the killer eludes capture as he seeks retribution against the judge. Kate places her own family in peril as she tracks the cunning criminal in a race against time. Enjoy a heart pumping emotional thrill ride as evil attempts to evade justice.

5.0 out of 5 stars What an enjoyable story! March 20, 2013

I almost never read crime fiction, but this really sucked me in. Excellent character development made the people real, and I actually cared what happened to them. The story was well paced, believable, and described such that I could feel the humidity. Now I'll have to read Coins of Death just to get back in there and see if the same characters are still there...I have to know!

5.0 out of 5 stars Realistic and a great read January 11, 2013
By Marti
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I picked up my e-reader today and thought I would read a few pages of the "The Blue Monster," and then do something useful around the house. Did not happen. Mike Roche and his characters took me by the hand and kept pulling me along until I finished the book.

The story is set in Tampa, Florida. The police department characters and other characters are so well-described that I could see them in my head. I hope that some of the less-than-nice characters do not show up in my dreams tonight.

For me, one important part of any crime fiction novel is that I must feel that I am in the place(s) where the story evolves. I want to know about the smells (pleasant or not), the flora and fauna, the weather, the food the characters eat, the brands of things they drink, and descriptions of the houses and buildings that are part of the story. I want detailed reports on the various forensic science investigations; e.g., the autopsies, the labs tests, the gun tests, etc. Mike Roche gave me all of that and so much more.

Mike Roche reminded me that there are always a few people, in all places of work, that are given jobs that are beyond their capabilities. In the fictional police department we have two incompetent detectives that their co-workers refer to as "dumb and dumber." Of course, D & D get in the way of the murder investigations and waste time chasing possible suspects that are not involved. However, it was nice to have a bit of humor introduced into a crime novel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Realistic read. December 5, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Quick paced, well written detective story. I especially enjoyed the interaction of the various characters. It was good to see that everyone that deserved it.. got their just-due.
There was an occasional misspelled word but for the most part the book seemed to be well edited and formatted.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Terrific Cop Story - Realistic September 1, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was reminded of Hill Street Blues when reading this story of murder and politics in the Tampa PD. Mike has created some great characters here - especially Kate, who is a strong woman and a dedicated detective, and her partner, Frank, the slightly grizzled PD vet who is lovable yet tough as rawhide. The ancillary characters bounce off these two like people do in real life and the story never feels over-dramatized. It feels as if this was written by a former cop, as it was. Really enjoyed the read.

5.0 out of 5 stars "The Blue Monster" Doesn't Disappoint February 11, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
By the second chapter of "The Blue Monster," I was completely drawn into what turned out to be an engaging read. Mike Roche's background in law enforcement was evident throughout with his credible portrayal of Detective Kate Alexander, the interaction with her fellow officers, and her daily grind in pursuit of finding a killer. The perfectly pitched dialogue kept the storyline moving smoothly. And just when you thought the case was solved and nailed shut at the end, you are jolted with an unexpected twist that fits perfectly for this author's tightly-packaged thriller.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hard to put it down December 15, 2012
By Patti
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
It is difficult not to put a book down during the hectic Christmas holidays, but I searched for free time to continue reading this book. The characters are strong and interesting. The plot moves along quickly but is detailed and realistic. I love Detective Alexander and look forward to following her thru her career with many books. Ignore the few misspellings - auto correct is not always our friend... The story line makes up for any flaws. Thank you Mike Roche. Keep them coming.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved this book! July 8, 2011
By Jack
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I loved this book! Granted there were editorial errors but the strength of the characters (especially Kate Alexander) and the pace of the writing made for a great read. I am a big fan of Michael Connelly, Daniel Silva and John Sandford but I think they need to look out because Mike Roche is their new competition. I also recommend Mr. Roche's KARMA, a young adult novel which introduces the character of Kate Alexander, so glad a friend recommended it to me. I am always waiting for new releases from my favorite authors and now I have added Mike Roche to my list. Mr. Roche, I am impatiently awaiting a sequel...
