Editorial Reviews

Review

“This fun yet intelligent and layered look at the story behind a favorite series will be devoured by fans and attract new readers.” (Booklist)

“Includes recipes, menus, drink concoctions and much charm.” (Kirkus Reviews)

“A smooth and seamless read . . . In the same way that Faith delivers delectable food to her clients, Ms. Page provides a gourmet treat for cozy mystery lovers.” (New York Journal of Books)

“Despite the fact that this is a murder mystery...the narrative warms with a sweetness rarely found in the genre. And it’s more rare and more pleasurable because this quality doesn’t resolve into a high-fructose gooey glob.” (Asbury Park Press)

“Fans of the Faith Fairchild series will probably be over the moon for this prequel that lovingly details how Faith met her husband . . . and then follows every calorie, fabric and gift of her glamorous upper-crust wedding preparations.” (Charlotte Observer)

“A rollicking adventure of intrigue and suspense, plus . . . it’s a lot of fun catching up with the past fun and shenanigans that Faith always manages to find herself embroiled in, and this is a very fitting way to celebrate such a huge milestone for this mystery series.” (Times Record News (Wichita Falls, Texas))

“Readers ... should accept the homecoming invitation extended in The Body in the Boudoir [and] the retro fun of perusing a vintage wedding menu, shopping at Bergdorf’s bridal salon and having tea at the Palm Court in the Plaza Hotel.” (New York Times Book Review)

From the Back Cover

It's 1990, and Faith Sibley is a single young woman leading a glamorous life in New York City. But when she meets the Reverend Thomas Fairchild it's love at first sight, and before she knows it her life is changing drastically. To begin with, she's beckoned north to chilly New England to visit her prospective in-laws, not all of whom welcome her with open arms. Then her new assistant, Francesca, appears to be hiding a family secret with roots in Italy; and her sister, Hope, becomes the target of a plot to derail her high-stakes financial career. Most of all, someone out there is dead set on making sure that Faith doesn't reach the altar. Before it's too late, she needs to figure out who is trying to sabotage the wedding—by eliminating the bride!

This is one of the best mysteries I've read in a long time. It has a unique approach, lots of suspense, characters who are beautifully drawn, and plenty of sense of place both in New York City and in small-town New England. There are bits of humor in it, and overall it's a feel-good story about how Faith Fairchild, successful owner of a catering business in New York, met her future husband, Tom, who is a minister in a small New England town.

I don't agree with the reviewers who found the story disjointed, although I would recommend this book to readers who are already familiar with at least some of the previous books in the series. If you know Faith Fairchild, her husband Tom, her sister Hope, and her best friend Pix, this book will be much more meaningful. Without that background, I could well imagine experiencing some confusion, and the characters just wouldn't have the depth that they do when you know their background.

As others have said, the flashback that is used in the book concerns the wedding anniversary that Faith and Tom are celebrating. On a flight to Europe, Faith remembers her own wedding plans and her decision to leave New York in order to be with Tom in his New England parish. The flashback only happens at the beginning and end of the book, so everything in the middle seems fresh, like a current mystery, except that if you know Faith, you know that she's alive and well and presently has two kids. Obviously, there is a time factor at work, but there is still plenty of suspense. I literally could not put the book down, and that doesn't happen to me very often. The plot and how it unfolds were truly original and very appealing.

Katherine Hall Page may not have even imagined what a winning combination she had hit upon when outlining her first Faith Fairchild mystery - but readers certainly did. The Agatha winning series has just published its 20th installment, and its fan base continues to grow. Rightly so - who doesn't love a mystery and also love to eat?

Page's heroine, Faith Fairchild, is a sometimes sleuth and caterer who can't resist a mystery or dishing up delectables. Happily for readers recipes are included as well as detailed, mouth-watering descriptions of food as the fast-paced story opens and suspense mounts.

With The Body In The Boudoir we're taken back to 1990 when Faith is still a single gal running her much-in-demand catering service, Have Faith. She is close to her sister, Hope, has terrific friends, a cool apartment and every thing she could want - she thinks. This changes when she caters a wedding reception and meets Rev. Tom Fairchild - "...handsome - tall, rusty-brown hair, deep brown eyes, yes, with those little flecks of gold."

Well even if we haven't read any of the preceding Fairchild mysteries we know from page one where this meeting is headed. What we would never dream is how rocky the road to the altar would be. Which, of course, is part of the fun in Page's books. So join in as chimneys fall, Faith hangs onto a rocky ledge with her fingernails, helps her sister when Hope is the target of a malicious scheme, and solves a major problem for her assistant, Francesca.

The mystery is multi-layered and the food is great in The Body In The Boudoir.

Enjoy!

While reading The Body in the Boudoir, the twentieth book in Ms. Page's Faith Fairchild series, I wondered more than once if this was going to be the last readers saw of Faith. In the end, I decided that was not the case, but it well could be. The book starts with Faith and Tom flying to Italy for a second honeymoon. While on the flight, Faith reminisces about how she met Tom, their courtship and wedding and it ends with Faith remembering all of those who have passed on.

It is quite a departure from previous books, and not particularly in a good way. The tone of the book is a bit melancholy and the plot lines-and there are several, never quite fit together. The main plot is built around the courtship and wedding planning of Faith and Tom, but there are several side plots involved. Faith becomes violently ill at her wedding shower, and that is but the first in a string of unusual things that happen to her. Is someone trying to kill her and if so why? Is it to prevent the wedding? It is apparent from the shower that Tom's sister and the long time family friend Sydney don't approve of Faith and that causes some ongoing issues for Faith.

The wedding is to take place at Faith's Great Uncle Sky's house on Long Island, and there at least three side plots tied to Sky and his household. Mysterious things keep happening at the house-stonework falling, a middle of the night break-in with little taken but a person (who was dressed as someone else) is murdered and a malfunctioning car. The housekeeper is a strange old bird and may be hiding secrets of her own. Sky's wife, his third, too may not be quite what she seems or at least their marriage appears to not be.
