Book Description

When a killer broke into James Blakely’s apartment and fired twelve bullets into his body, it was the end of James’s life—but just the beginning of his journey to redemption. Sentenced to burn in hell for a crime he cannot remember, James is given the choice to proceed immediately to the afterlife or haunt the world of the living in search of his killer. Electing to return to Earth as a ghost, he attempts to solve the mystery of his own murder, visits the living—starting with his daughter and ex-wife—and confronts the sins in his past that put him on the fast track to eternal damnation.

With the help of a world-class medium, James begins to make progress. Forgiveness is possible, it seems, for a good man who made some bad choices. But with the memories of his life on Earth fading out one by one and his ghost body rapidly disintegrating, James faces the very real prospect of vanishing completely before he learns the devastating secret that kept his soul from achieving its true potential.

About the Author

J.R. Rain is an ex–private investigator who now writes full-time in the Pacific Northwest. Chronically creative from an early age, he first fell in love with writing while making his very own Choose Your Own Adventure books as a child, and has since written thirty-three novels and five short-story collections, as well as screenplays for Paramount Pictures. Rain was born in Southern California and has lived up and down the West Coast. He currently resides just outside of Seattle, living in a small house on a small island with his small dog, Sadie, who has more energy than Robin Williams.

2.0 out of 5 stars Creative yet boring November 10, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
1) Technically, the book is well-written - a very pleasant reprieve from the hundreds of distracting errors in many free ebooks!
2) The plot is fairly unique, and at FIRST it seems interesting as we're offered a close look at death and becoming a ghost. If only the focus had remained there...

Those are 2 stars. Now for the 3 missing ones:

3) Nowhere in the synopsis is it mentioned that this is, for the most part, a Christian novel. A ghost story is advertised, but what's delivered is more theological than supernatural.
4) The repetition. This story could be shortened by half without losing anything. Well, except a lot of redundancy.
5) Characters! Where are they? It needs another character (or 5) to add some depth and round out a very flat environment.

5.0 out of 5 stars LOVED IT!! May 22, 2010
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I just "found" JR Rain and his novels, and I'm captivated! I first read Moon Dance, and it was good, but this was beyond GREAT! If you enjoy fantasy with ghosts and a little bit of theology mixed in..this is the book for you. I'm off to read more of Mr. Rain's novels...great job, and please keep them coming!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Makes you laugh; makes you think! May 19, 2010
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I downloaded this book because it got good reviews, and also because the premise interested me.

It was a very entertaining read! Think "Ghost Whisperer" from the rather humorous vantage point of the ghost! ...I was caught up in the story immediately, and found it hard to put down. It certainly is a departure from the kind of book I normally read; but I loved every bit of it.

Long after the book was finished, I was still thinking about the ideas and metaphors about death and the hereafter, and so I started reading it again. I've told all my friends about it. Not often I do that!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A book that has a "Sixth Sense" flavor January 1, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I had never heard of J. R. Rain before reading this book, but the synopsis of The Body Departed intrigued me so much that I downloaded it via the Kindle, and I was not disappointed. It was a very fast, short read that kept me in the deliciously in the dark and turning pages. Since it is written from James' point of view, the main character, we only know and see what he knows and sees. The way in which Rain wrote this book is very effective in keeping the mystery alive and the reader guessing. My only gripe was it was too short; however, I am a believer that if a story is done, it's done and the silly guidelines created by publishing houses these days that require authors to make their stories 100,000+ words or 300 plus pages is simply ridiculous. So, with that said, I commend Rain on not adding anything unecessary to the story. I never skipped a sentence, a paragraph, or chapter and that is the highest compliment I can give an author. To me, every detail, every sentence, and every word was pertinent to the story and moved it forward. Unlike many other authors who are forced by publishing house requirements to lengthen their plots, or add filler, Rain, does not. Also, I found very few if any typos in Rain's work. I can't say the same of other books. I enjoyed this story so much I bought other e-books by Rain and haven't been disappointed yet. Well worth the read - Rain is a very concise, creative, clean, writer!

Looking for something inexpensive to read, i downloaded this and "Moon Dance." The Body Departed is a look at a troubled spirit who can't let go of his former life. He knows there is something unfinished. The author creates a believable story that will leave you crying - from the deeply moving ending to wanting more stories from this exceptional author!

5.0 out of 5 stars Like nothing you've read before... April 29, 2010
By RJ
Format:Kindle Edition
This was my third J.R. Rain book in 3 days. having just discovered him I can say he is not your typical writter. I am loosing sleep trying to cram his stories in. His strong imagination takes twists you dont see coming. Bringing Jesus to life for a spell was a bold move and a bit disconcerting, but I finished the book with tears in my eyes and a new possibility in after lifes.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not for me June 30, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I wish some of the previous reviews had mentioned there is a lot of theology in this book. Sorry, that is not for me. I gave the book two stars because the author is clearly a talented writer. I could not finish the book, but will try another by the same author.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pick up this book July 11, 2010

James Blakely was murdered two years ago and ever since he has been a troubled spirit "haunting" the apartment building that he lived in. He gets to visit with his daughter at night while she is sleeping and he spirit is open to his. He is great friends with Pauline, the medium in the building who drinks a little too much, but who wouldn't dealing with the dead all day! James is convinced he is going to hell but maybe there is a way for him to change things around. Gotta read the book to find out how and if it works.

I fell in love with James from page one. He is a sweet guy who is confused in death. Watching him on his adventures is very heartwarming as are the scenes with his daughter. I think the author did a fantastic job in making you feel like you are right there. The characters are like your family and you find yourself routing for James throughout the book. There are surprises that all get tied together as the book goes on and the end will surely bring a tear to your eye and a smile to your face.

This was my first book by J.R. Rain but I am going in search of more. I would recommend The Body Departed to anyone who likes a nice ghost story along the lines of Ghost. It's a nice, easy read.

An interesting read, I like the idea of the book, the whole "can't leave till your stuff is fixed" concept. Well written, flowed well and kept me entertained.

This book was an easy read and kept my attention for a few days. I think the book tends to get boring and long in the middle. By the end you can't put it down though.
