About the Author

Jeff Laffel has had many careers. First as an elementary school teacher, then as a high school teacher he, like his main character Lena, always loved his classes. After teaching, Mr. Laffel wrote for Films In Review magazine, interviewing such film luminaries as James Earl Jones, Joseph Mankiewicz, Sylvia Sidney and Betty Comden and Adolph Green. He is also the author of the novel, GONE THE SUN. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

THE BODY UNDER THE BLEACHERS by Jeff Laffel:

Succinctly? Get this book. Get it in hardcover, paperback, eBook...smoke signals- get the book. The empathy and realism of Jeff Laffel's characters in GONE THE SUN remain with a whole new cast in THE BODY UNDER THE BLEACHERS (reason alone to get the book..) but that's the end of the similarities. This book felt like it wasn't written by the guy who took us on SUN's emotional roller-coaster, but by a guy who's been writing murder mysteries all along. The pace is quicker, choppier where it needs to be, then suddenly slowed for more intense examination. I read the book in one sitting and three-quarters though it I knew who the killer was- I was wrong. What struck me was this author created a mystery with such a despicable character that the readers wish they were the killer! It looks like Jeff's trademark is his director's eye for atmosphere and ear for dialogue; you'll be in the room with a detective, or a high school student, a `cougar' wife, or a gym teacher, and Jeff sells each occasion successfully. I caught myself (wrong again) when I got `into' the book- I thought he might have gone for a target audience (not many books mention the `Stop 20' diner!) but later I realized his target was broader; locations aside, this book was written for adults, teenagers, and anyone who has been either.
I don't want to go on about the plot and risk spoiling it for you but I will say the characters are varied and recognizable and it will seem like you've even met them before. (You have- believe me!) The heart of the story is a richly satisfying murder mystery (again, don't try to solve it on your own- that's a waste of time) that will ultimately find a spot on your bookshelf designated for more (hopefully) `Lena Cohen Conroy' mysteries- this should be a series.
Did I say "get this book" already?

This book has all the basic elements that make a great mystery. The cast of characters is rich, vivid, and real. The plot develops nicely and keeps you guessing. It's a fairly short book and is easy reading. Good as the plot of the story is, the real mystery for me was how Laffel deftly manages to load so much depth into so few pages! The genius of this book is in the way Laffel presents the story. He incorporates subtle symbolism, spoon feeding it to you in a way that you barely notice. But he not only provides you with said symbolism, he masterfully, through the story itself, teaches you how to look for and interpret the symbolism! By the time I finished reading the book, I was looking to re-read it to see what I may have missed! This is a novel that will not only entertain the mystery buff in you, it will change the way you read or view any work of fiction for the better. Laffel may claim to be retired from teaching, but the evidence shows otherwise.

I loved this book! I fell in love with our heroine LenaConroy! I had requested this book on my Christmas list and happily received it! After the big day of cooking, and lots of company I took the next day off, cuddled up under the covers in a warm robe and got swept away into the world of great charachters, smart, witty and warm dialog and spent the afteroon with my new best friend, Lena Conroy! Jeff Laffel is a great writer. I was in the book , having the adventures with the cast and crew and felt when I was finished reading , that I wanted more!!! I hope Mr. Laffel makes this into a series. When a new Lena Conroy comes available, I won't wait for Christmas, I will purchase it the day it comes out!!!! More Please !!!!!!!

You will fall in love with Lena in Jeff Laffel's latest novel "The Body Under The Bleachers"! Lena Cohen Conroy is the teacher we all wanted to have in high school! Through the medium of film she effortlessly creates open dialogue with her students and Nothing is off limits. Her compassionate and off beat approach to teaching reaches students of all levels.
But then Lena stumbles. She stumbles on the body of a teacher under the school bleachers. Was it an accidental death or was he murdered? Watch Lena's Hulk like transformation from super teacher into super sleuth as she sets out to solve the mystery!
I'm on the edge of my seat waiting for the second part of this series!!

Like most great thrillers, The Body Under the Bleachers has many personalities. It could be a Noir era story with a tough as nails investigator who enjoys a good glass of scotch, and a few secrets held back from a nosy cop. Perhaps a cozy mystery that takes place in a small town inhabited by people we know who have secrets we can't comprehend. Maybe it's a murder mystery with a heart. It is all of this and more. Read it once then once again as I have. The layers of Mr. Laffel's writing will unravel before you, and you will be hooked. I look forward to my next adventure with Ms. Lena Cohen Conroy.

I was recently given this book as a gift. I found it wonderful. Truly a MUST read! If you love a mystery with plot twists and keeps you at the edge of your seat till the end this is for you. No need to try and figure out who the killer is. You will never figure it out. It was a wonderful read, a true page turner. I am waiting with great anticipation for the next in this series. Mr. Laffel has written a Who-Done-It that would baffle Dame Agatha Christie's Poirot & Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe (my 2 all time favorite print detectives)
