You will fall in love with Lena in Jeff Laffel's latest novel "The Body Under The Bleachers"! Lena Cohen Conroy is the teacher we all wanted to have in high school! Through the medium of film she effortlessly creates open dialogue with her students and Nothing is off limits. Her compassionate and off beat approach to teaching reaches students of all levels.
But then Lena stumbles. She stumbles on the body of a teacher under the school bleachers. Was it an accidental death or was he murdered? Watch Lena's Hulk like transformation from super teacher into super sleuth as she sets out to solve the mystery!
I'm on the edge of my seat waiting for the second part of this series!!

An easy read, this book explores the fall-out resulting from homophobia. It may not be a taxing book, but it does highlight what can happen - and often does - when people in authority abuse their powers. And how damaging it can be.
It's quite a sad book really, but still a good one for a long train journey, or a weekend away. And the characters are amusing. Am interested to see what happens in the next book.

I loved this book! I fell in love with our heroine LenaConroy! I had requested this book on my Christmas list and happily received it! After the big day of cooking, and lots of company I took the next day off, cuddled up under the covers in a warm robe and got swept away into the world of great charachters, smart, witty and warm dialog and spent the afteroon with my new best friend, Lena Conroy! Jeff Laffel is a great writer. I was in the book , having the adventures with the cast and crew and felt when I was finished reading , that I wanted more!!! I hope Mr. Laffel makes this into a series. When a new Lena Conroy comes available, I won't wait for Christmas, I will purchase it the day it comes out!!!! More Please !!!!!!!

I was recently given this book as a gift. I found it wonderful. Truly a MUST read! If you love a mystery with plot twists and keeps you at the edge of your seat till the end this is for you. No need to try and figure out who the killer is. You will never figure it out. It was a wonderful read, a true page turner. I am waiting with great anticipation for the next in this series. Mr. Laffel has written a Who-Done-It that would baffle Dame Agatha Christie's Poirot & Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe (my 2 all time favorite print detectives)

The Body Under the Bleachers is a great mystery. There's danger, a very empathetic and relatable civilian sleuth, a wide cast of characters - almost all of whom had a motive, and a despicable villian who just happened to be the body! In many ways it reminded me of an Agatha Christie novel - everyone had motive and opportunity. Laffel captures the realism of a classroom as well as the sinister turn of phrase. The book flew by too fast, and I can't wait for the next Lena Cohen Conroy mystery!

This book has all the basic elements that make a great mystery. The cast of characters is rich, vivid, and real. The plot develops nicely and keeps you guessing. It's a fairly short book and is easy reading. Good as the plot of the story is, the real mystery for me was how Laffel deftly manages to load so much depth into so few pages! The genius of this book is in the way Laffel presents the story. He incorporates subtle symbolism, spoon feeding it to you in a way that you barely notice. But he not only provides you with said symbolism, he masterfully, through the story itself, teaches you how to look for and interpret the symbolism! By the time I finished reading the book, I was looking to re-read it to see what I may have missed! This is a novel that will not only entertain the mystery buff in you, it will change the way you read or view any work of fiction for the better. Laffel may claim to be retired from teaching, but the evidence shows otherwise.

"The Body Under the Bleachers", by Jeff Laffel (author of "Gone The Sun" -- another book you should read, if you haven't already) is a fun, quick read. It takes place on Long Island, where I grew up. So aside from the enjoyable storyline and great characters, it was fun reading about areas, towns and places I know. I love a good murder mystery, don't you? "The Body Under The Bleachers" doesn't disappoint. I can't wait to see what Lena Cohen Conroy gets up to next time...with the help of her cohorts. Enjoy!
