ST Romance author Eve Asbury, and Sensual Romance writer Gayle Eden are also fiction author B.D. Dillon. They are all alter egos of an author whose dreams of writing were put on hold in her twenties while she raised a son and daughter and worked several jobs. Romance novels kept her sane during some of those busy years, which took her from West Virginia to living in a suburb of Washington, DC for fifteen more, until finally settling her in East Tennessee, by the Holston River, where she can write to her hearts content.

A writer who believes in story telling, in giving herself the freedom to write whatever story speaks to her heart. This prolific author says she tries not to limit her characters by outline, but has a vague idea, that generally they run away with. She's found its better to indulge her muse than try and control it. A bit like real life, it happens, and there's always something new and surprising that makes the experience rewarding.

I have been reading my way through historical romances by Eve Asbury and have not been disappointed yet.

Hawk and Raven are like brothers, both `half-breeds' who have suffered all kinds of abuse. At the start of the story Raven's wife and unborn child have been murdered and he has retreated to the bottom of a whisky bottle, unable to summon any will to carry on. Hawk needs him to help a rancher in serious trouble of losing everything.

Jaci Brodi has to save the only thing she has in the world - her ranch. Her abusive father is dead and his callous and dishonest treatment of everyone has left her with no one willing to help. She needs Hawk and Raven desperately and they agree, even on waiting for payment. When Jaci's sister LeAnn arrives from the East, she is bitterly disappointed that Jaci can't buy her out, so that she can return East and find a rich man to marry. She hates the ranch, the animals and the `savages'. She finds no common ground with her sister, who dresses like a man and works outdoors all day.

There is plenty of suspense and drama with powerful and corrupt local men trying to force Jaci out by any means possible.

Here again Eve Asbury creates a sense of journey, drawing the reader into the sights, sounds and smells of the ranch, the fear of attack, the prejudice and haunting memories.

Each of the 4 main characters has to fight his/her own demons on order to break through to future happiness. They seem so different and yet they are all alike in some way. They help each other to break down barriers, to trust and to love.

I don't want to spoil the story by giving more detail. This is a rewarding read with edgy characters and a sense of journey and development.
