I value this book for the way it lets me tour though many of my favorite baseball memories and legends while also staying up to date on the new stars and latest developments in the game. This is a great, can't-miss gift book. Perfect for sharing one's love of major league baseball with a friend or relative. I gave it to my brainy nephew, a box-score-keeping baseball nut, and it kept him in a happy reading trance for days. He barely put it down long enough to eat and brush his teeth. This book celebrates our national pastime in a way that bridges generations.

I don't have a lot of time on my hands, going to school working, full time and taking care of my kids, but when I do have a spare moment I LOVE to read books like this one! It's such an interesting and fun read. I've even sat down and read some of the facts and stories to my Son. I have always enjoyed baseball, but this book made me love it even more. I would recommend (and have) this book to any friend who enjoys the sport or those who want to know more about it!

Find a quiet spot, get a cold drink and thumb through this compendium of baseball lore. There will be a requisite number of "Wow", "I didn't know that!" "Oh My". The diehard won;t read it. The diehard will savor it.

What I liked about this book is its fairly succinct history of the highlights of the game. I never took the time to learn the history and legends of the game even if I love baseball and this book helped give me the feeling I could hang with the best of them at a sports bar, at least when a baseball game is on the screen. It breaks the game into historical background, legendary players, and all the tidbits you need to make it sound like you know of what you speak. Recommended.

purchased for my son and husband, both enjoyed. However it was a little to much for my son to handle alone he's 10 so they read together and great price during 100 for $3.99 or less

This is a very interesting and fun book that's full of facts and trivia about the great game of baseball. It's perfect to read through it on my smartphone during those long commercial breaks between innings.

According to the little progress bar on my Kindle, I have read 13% of this book. Perhaps that's not enough on which to base a review, but I doubt I'll read much more. Here's why: For a book with 'literacy' in the title, it borders on the illiterate. For example, Mr. Martinez confuses 'rein' and 'reign' -- in a sentence criticizing announcers' poor English! And he is fond of hyperbole, too frequently calling somebody the undisputed greatest (baserunner/hitter/manager/pitcher)of all time, or insisting that a record will surely stand forever. I rarely give up on a book, but this one just doesn't cut it.

As someone who has read dozens and dozens of baseball books there was little in this book I hadn't heard before or used as cocktail fodder previously. Still, it is a great book to have as a reference and a fantastic one for someone who is learning baseball. Should be the "if you love me read this" book given to the now-serious girlfriend of every baseball nut. Nothing is worse than getting a blank stare when you say "Roberto Clemente" "Forbes Field" or "the hot corner."

Recommended on kindle for quick at-game reference when people cheer historic or random events from trivia or out-of-town scores.
