Book Description

October 19, 2007
An intellectual tour de force; the most comprehensive
reference book for the near-death phenomenon.
The Big Book of Near-Death Experiences encompasses every aspect of the near-death phenomenon: the experience, aftereffects, and implications. Atwater's simple, appealing format includes drawings and cartoons by Spirit Painter and Chuck Vadun and sidebars from experts. She investigates and reports on the power of changed lives, the reality of deceased who come back, visitors at death's edge, out-of-body travel, the expansion of normal faculties, the awesome presence of Deity and the importance of spirituality.

The Sourcebook examines near-death studies from the "Moody Miracle" early days, through the myths of "the light at the end of the tunnel" and "the religion of the resuscitated," to 2007. After 32 years of work with clinical prospective studies in several countries, the reality of the near-death experience has been verified, confirming its importance in the study of consciousness.

About the Author

P.M.H. Atwater is a global leader in the study of the NDE. She dedicates her life to investigate and report near-death phenomena using a systematic, scientific method. Through her efforts, medical workers who routinely deal with trauma and emergencies are now recognizing and recording the near-death experience and sharing them. In 2001, the medical journal Lancet reported on the near-death experience, for the first time citing the work of Atwater to the global medical community. This book is the culmination of her life-long work and is written to be a sourcebook for doctors, nurses, EMTs, and anyone who has experienced either first hand or through a loved one the life-altering near-death phenomenon. She has appeared on Larry King Live, Regis and Kathy Lee, and Geraldo and is a workshop leader at major spiritual/holistic gatherings. She has addressed audiences at International Association for Near-Death Studies conferences, as well as the United Nations.

My Doubts Have Been Settled November 3, 2007
By Christa
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was completely chilled, but in such an amazing way by the time I finished reading this book. I have never read a more persuasive and convincing arguement for the theory that life truly does not end once our time on this earth wraps up. I've always been a big believer in God as the end all and be all of my existence. I still have that faith, but this book also broadened my mind to "spirituality" and less towards organized religion as the foundation for my faith. I also gained an understanding of the human mind and body that I never in 35 years actually sat and contemplated. I more or less just drifted through life simply "existing". There are a lot of books out there who seem to be made for daytime talk shows with their leaning toward the dramatic. They err toward cartoonish instead of convincing. THIS however is imo THE only book that you need to truly convince yourself that you have absolutely nothing to fear. I was left with no doubts and a complete and utter acceptance of LAD. I hope others get as much out of this book as I did.

Not what I expected... November 7, 2007
Format:Paperback
What I expected was a large book filled with lots and lots of near-death experiences. What I got was some experiences (many seem abbreviated) along with analysis and the creation of all sorts of categories. While that is valuable for scientific research - I feel the title is somewhat misleading.

Not what I expected January 5, 2008
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I also found this book was not what I expected. The author claims to have interviewed the near-death experiences of 3,000 adults and 277 children and yet there are very few stories of actual near-death experiences.

The Big Book of Near Death Experiences
This was more like a dictionary explaining the terms associated with near death experiences. Very disappointing.

Disappointed
More like the Big Book of Mundane Stories. Not enough narrative accounts. Lots of repetition. Previously NDE for Dummies. Should have retained the title.

Four stars if you skip chapter 15
