Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Full-bleed vintage illustrations by Jessie Willcox Smith, Maxfield Parrish, Margaret Evans Price and others grace the pages of this cheerful 9×9 hardcover book, divided into five sections: arts and crafts activities, condensed fairy tales, songs, games and nursery rhymes. The projects are simple and have buoyant instructions (steps to make Animal Masks suggest, Add some hairs if you are a mammal, scales if you are feeling reptilian, or feathers to fluff in the birdbath); songs such as Old MacDonald and Ants Go Marching include musical notation; and familiar stories and rhymes appear as well. The lively assemblage will appeal to toddlers, and the heirloom images should captivate them as well as nostalgic adults. Up to age 3. (Sept.)

"A treasure trove of games, activities, songs, rhymes, stories and more that toddlers will adore.  All the well-loved classics of childhooh are given pride of places, along with fabulous cintage children's illustrations in gently muted, textured colors that add to the nostalgic appeal...a great resource for preschool staff and teachers, libraries, and parents and schools as well.  Children will love the beautiful pictures that heavily stud the whole book.  Great editorial selection of literature, ideas and illustrations are presented beautifully to children and adults."

This is just right for our 3 year old daughter who likes to sing and do simple crafts. It helps Mom and Dad remember the words to classic nursery rhymes we haven't sung/heard in a long time. Love the vintage artwork. I agree with the other post about the lack of diversity, but that wasn't what I was expecting with this title anyhow. No surprises there. Our child just loves to look at the pages and flip through this on her own as well. I will be buying this as gifts for all my friends and family with 2-3 year old kids.

I ordered this book because I am always looking for high quality toddler treasuries to add to my 2 and 3 year olds' homeschool curriculum. I am a homeschooling mom of 7, 5, 3, 1 and another coming.

-Book size and quality of binding and art work are all great for reading to young children. I ordered some other Lena Tabori Big Books and they were smaller, but this is a great lap size at about an 8" square book that's about 2" thick. Pages are good thick quality.

-Crafts are relatively basic, but still nice to use mostly on-hand household stuff. Unfortunately, I wouldn't label most of them "toddler" crafts. Really, the age ranges vary quite a bit. I don't know many three year olds that can whistle from a grass blade. And many of the crafts are things that you as the parent do for the kid, like make them a paper stocking that has stickers, notes, and pictures, or make a valentine, or make a circus train. I think in this day and age, you would let an older sibling make the train or you would pull out one from Melissa and Doug, unless you have a lot of free time. Most of the crafts vary along this vein.

-The Nursery Rhymes section is not lap-readable for small children. There is only one poem per 2 page spread, and they are short. I already do these rhymes, as most parents, with a toddler on my lap and don't need the cumbersome presence of a large treasury. Ie. 5 little piggies, baa baa black sheep, etc. But, this would be a good gift for a brand new mom or dad who maybe has forgotten a lot of these since they were a kid. I remember my husband's first year as a dad involved a lot of football fight songs for lap rides... I am not sure kids care as long as it rhymes and mom or dad acts goofy.

-Same is generally true for the games section.

A nice book to share with small children with charming illustrations of mostly white children from the 1930s, which is its major drawback.
