About the Author

Shannon’s mother says she was a storyteller from birth, jabbering endlessly in her carriage as the two strolled through the neighborhood; once she could form complete sentences, she made up stories, bribing her younger siblings to perform them in mini plays. When she was ten, she began writing books, mostly fantasy stories where she was the heroine, and she continued writing secretly for years while pursuing acting in stage and improv comedy. After detours studying in Mexico, the U. K., and Paraguay, Shannon earned a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Utah and a Masters in Creative Writing from the University of Montana. In the interim, she submitted short stories and novels to magazines and publishers, saving all her rejection letters which she has since laminated into one continuous 60-foot roll which she proudly unfurls to audiences as a testament to her dedication and determination.

Since the publication of her first book, The Goose Girl, in 2003, Shannon has become a beloved author to young readers as well as booksellers and educators. Her third novel, Princess Academy, earned her a Newbery Honor and is a The New York Times, Book Sense, and Publishers Weekly bestseller. Shannon has also written two books for adults, Austenland and The Actor and the Housewife. Shannon lives in Salt Lake City, Utah, with her husband, Dean, their children, and their pet, a small plastic pig.

I read this series of 3 in less than a week (and bought Shannon's 4th book the next day). I have a 2 yr old son and hope someday he will enjoy these as much as I did. And if I have a girl, I know she will. The books were just the right amount of "paranormal" and adventure and "romance" that anyone would find it hard to put them down. I knew Shannon Hale would not disappoint.

If you haven't read any of her books and are a bit leery of buying all 3 in a set, I promise you won't be disappointed!!

For years, my friend told me about this "goose girl" book that I need to read. After my family had a rough week, I needed a pick-me-up to I finally bought it.

Terrific read. I found the stories to be fresh and interesting. The Goose Girl follows an unloved princess as she journeys to a new land to meet the prince she's never met. But when her escorts turn out to be would-be assasins and imposters, she is forced to live the life of a peasant until she masters a secret power that helps her overcome her trials.

Emma Burning is a little darker because Emma's power is fire, and fire consumes. Filled with an impulse she can barely control, Emma finds herself in the middle of a war...and maight be the key to stopping it.

River Secrets felt light and cheerful after the burning one, but it still pulled me into the story. Raso is charming and loyal, even under pressure. But when bodies turn up that frame his army for murder, he acts to try and prevent a second war.

I cannot say enough good things about the Books of Bayern series. I absolutely love them. I highly recommend them to others, especially youth. They are clean, interesting, entertaining, and they ask you to thing deeper about the characters of the book and in turn your own. You finish each book wanting more and wanting to meet the characters and be a part of their circle and for me, there's no better ending to a book than wanting to be in it.

SUMMARY:

The Goose Girl: All her life, Crown Princess Ani has felt like she isn't good enough for her position. She doesn't converse easily with others and would rather be outside than locked inside doing princess things. So with her father's tragic death, Ani's mother makes a contract with Bayern, a neighboring country, for her marraige to their prince. Ani is devistated as she's always thought she would be queen of her own country, not some foreign land. Along the way to Bayern, she is overthrown by her lady-in-waiting and must pose as a goose girl while she attempts to find a way to regain her position. Throughout the journey she makes many new friends, discovers new talents, and finds that she is more important than she's ever dreamed.

Enna Burning: Enna is one of Princess Ani's best friends. She learns fire-speaking, as she is devastated from her brother's death, and the fire seems like a new friend. But fire is not as good as it sounds. Fire consumes everything that it touches, including Enna. In a novel with a totally different feel from the Goose Girl, Enna is faced with a difficult choice. Can she use her power to it's full extent to help Bayern win the war before it consumes her?

River Secrets: Lovable Razo, another one of the princess's friends gets his own story. Along with most of the characters from the previous two books, Razo goes on a mission to Tira, where war recently ended, to accompany the diplomat to try and set up some frienship between the two countries. But someone is trying to get war brewing again and Razo is the only one who can find the people responsible and keep everyone out of danger.

WHY YOU SHOULD READ THESE BOOKS:

Shannon Hale does an excellent job with these stories.

I really enjoyed these books. They are extremely well written, and good clean, love stories. They're YA, but I loved them. Goose Girl is the first book in the series, followed by Enna Burning, then River Secrets. Each book stands alone--you could pick any of them up any time and not have to have read the previous books to understand what's going. Each book is written from the point of view of a different character, which I have to say, for this series I really loved. As you read them, you learn about the other characters from previous stories though, because they are all about the kingdom of Bayern, and they are all friends.

My two favorites were Goose Girl and Enna Burning. I couldn't pick a favorite between them. They're both different, and depending on my mood, I sometimes like one better than the other, but it always changes. A new book came out called Forest Born. It is a continuation of the Books of Bayern. I didn't like it as much as Goose Girl or Enna Burning, but it was still a great read. You can't go wrong with these books. Really. Buy them. You'll be glad you did.

Hale has a great style of keeping you entertained and giving you a satisfying ending. I think the mark of a really poor writer is one that has to leave a cliff hanger to make you feel obligated to buy the next. I only buy Hale books because I *love* her stories! Each book can stand on its own, and each is so well written it leaves me wanting more!

These are books my daughter and I have read again and again!
