I loved this album. The huge, beautiful sound of Gene Ammons tenor is well recorded. He plays some wonderful ballads (Blue velvet, Here's that rainy day, Didn't We, Feeling good) and he also swings hard on titles like Ger-ru, He's a real gone guy (a burner !), Jungle strut. The band is fine with Sonny Phillips on organ, Bernard Purdie on drums, Junior Mance on piano.

This is the type of jazz that is both accessible and enjoyable, as opposed to the "free jazz" movement that turned a lot of people off at the time. Listen to Jungle Strut and the hauntingly beautiful "Didn't We" and that 's almost the price of admission (listeners from Charleston, SC might remember "Didn't We" as the theme for Del Woods' "Jazz Interational" show on WPAL radio on Sunday nights). However, the version of "Son of a Preacher Man" bears litttle resemblance to the Dusty Springfield tune. But that minor issue aside, enjoy.

Great music. Well recorded and transferred to CD. A compilation of the serious soul bop master. Pesky heroin habit cut him short but this man could play is a criminal understatement. Get this one and all his older mono Prestige titles too. Best of those IMHO is The Happy Blues. Do it your way Gene!

It's been said. Coltrane and Rollins went in differient directions. While that's all and good for a real music lover. Jug played beautiful jazz a great talent. This cd is terrific. One cool dud.

Typical Ammons tenor blues. Some good sidemen with him
