Book Description

May 24, 2011
Peter Hoffmeister was a nervous child who ran away repeatedly and bit his fingernails until they bled. Home-schooled until the age of fourteen, he had only to deal with his parents and siblings on a daily basis, yet even that sometimes proved too much for him. Over the years, he watched his mother disintegrate into her own form of mania, while his father—a scholar and doctor who had once played semi-pro baseball—was strict and pushed Peter particularly hard. He wanted only the best from his son but in the process taught Peter to expect only the worst from himself. In the midst of his chaotic home life, Peter began to hear a voice—an insistent, monotone that would periodically dictate his actions. When Peter finally entered public school he started to break free from his father’s control—only to fall sway to the voice more and more. His obsessive-compulsive behavior morphed into ruthless competition in sports and, ultimately, into lies, violence, and drugs.

The End of Boys follows Hoffmeister to the very brink of sanity and back, in a harrowing and heartbreaking account of the trauma of adolescence and the redemption available to us all, if only we choose to find it.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Praise for The End of Boys

"Peter Brown Hoffmeister calls every sense into play, providing rich imagery, grounded reflection, and the tension inherent in a coming-of-age tale in which drugs, violence, and a genetic tendency toward OCD conspire." —Los Angeles Review

"The End of Boys takes no prisoners with its gritty, entrancing realism . . . a chilling and captivating read . . . a voice that is refreshingly new." —Eugene Weekly

"About a difficult childhood...tough stuff, honest and real." —The Oregonian

"...one powerful memoir...delineates a life going off the track..." —Rock and Ice Magazine

“Through all the rage, the drugs, the violence and despair, what ultimately lies at the heart of Peter Hoffmeister’s vivid true-life tale The End of Boys is love and forgiveness, and a warmth that is as tangible as it is genuine. This is a harrowing journey for sure, but one beautifully rendered and well worth taking. It is the journey home.” —Nathan Singer, author of A Prayer for Dawn

"Bluntly compelling . . . Hoffmeister foregrounds his own experiences over introspection or critique, lending the work a rare weight and immediacy." —The Portland Mercury

"In vivid prose, Peter Brown Hoffmeister depicts the relentlessly violent days and nights of a male adolescence. He writes about authorities' failures to protect their young charges, and about the consequences of those failures. At the book's best moments, Hoffmeister looks directly at his rage and tells us what he sees." —Sarah Manguso, author of The Two Kinds of Decay

"Compelling from the first page, The End of Boys is a stark and gritty memoir of a tormented adolescence, where the demons of obsessive compulsive disorder, drugs, and violence are banished by the healing light of literature and faith. Both haunting and uplifting, The End of Boys is a touching and powerful account of a turbulent transition from youth to manhood." —Jamie Maslin, author of Socialist Dreams and Beauty Queens and Iranian Rappers and Persian Porn

"The End of Boys is remarkable story, a testament to the spirit of young boys everywhere, to mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters, to friends and the parents of friends, to teachers, cops, and counselors, to art and literature and the human desire to find a place in the world, to build a meaningful life out of shards and fragments. Peter Hoffimeister has written a terrific book about the human struggle to regain ourselves after great disillusion and desperation. This is a fine book, made of fine true words, each one tough, carefully chosen, and hard-won. I read The End of Boys in one sitting." —Dorianne Laux, author of What We Carry, finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award

"The End of Boys, the story of a boy who can’t find his family even in the midst of them, is big-hearted and heartbreaking. Hoffmeister’s journey through the loss, confusion, and fear of adolescence is unflinching and free of even a single note of sentimentality or self-pity. Read this book. It will punch you in the face, in the best way possible." —Miriam Gershow, author of The Local News

5.0 out of 5 stars In one day- May 2, 2011
Format:Paperback
As a college student, I do not read for fun. I do not like to read.
I have no time to "curl up with a good book". I ordered this book because it was written by my former english teacher.I did not know what I was getting myself into. When the book came, I read it all in one day. This book consumed all my time. The one thing about this book that will grab you is the brutal honesty the author writes with. There are no boring parts or filler for this book. From the startling first chapter to the end, the book peaks your curiosity. Even when you reach the end, you feel that there is more to the story.

Now you may say "hey!... this is coming from a kid that took some of the authors classes, he is biased". No good sir. I had one class and that was it. I was by far one of the least liked kids in his class. Im very glad I bought this book.

I came looking for a tale of a former teachers dirty laundry but found a story so amazing and gut wrenching, I couldn't help but relate to the authors struggle. He paints a vivid picture of his life and desperate struggle for normalcy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Harrowing, wonderful read July 13, 2011
Format:Paperback
End of Boys is the gripping story of a sad, twisted childhood, and the struggle of a gifted young boy to emerge, whole, from it--all the more disturbing, powerful and, ultimately, uplifting because it's true. Peter Hoffmeister is the eldest son of a doctor and an artist--a controlling, perfectionist father and narcissistic, mercurial mother. An obviously gifted kid from a deceptively privileged background. Hoffmeister is unflinching as he describes his family and himself--unsentimental, even brutal at times--and the road he takes from his homeschooled, hyper-competitive, emotionally barren youth through a harrowing path to adulthood. I was completely drawn into this book, and this world, for better or worse. End of Boys is a fast read, (lucky, because it's hard to put down), and completely captivating. Gritty style, and uncompromising honesty. Hoffmeister's boy is the kind of survivor you want to know. The one who, without excuse or apology, finds his way back from the brink. This is a great read, I highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best new writer, a superb book May 28, 2011

Fantastic book, a very satisfying read. I loved the writing style and the images the author created. I must admit I related to this story all too well, and I found myself reliving memories I had managed to put away long ago.

One of my favorite quotes: "At night when I am alone, the machine comes suddenly like an old relative. The machine moves in, settles, unpacks its suitcases in the closet, hangs coats on the bedroom hooks. The machine moves in with its monotone."

This book is filled with great imagery, dark and revealing and expertly crafted.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't put it down! May 13, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I've been carrying this book around since I got it, two days ago. I'm not done yet, I have four little kids and almost no time to read. Sometimes I read just a few paragraphs, other times I can read a few chapters. Gripping. One of those books you don't want to stop till you're done, but yet you don't ever want to be done.

I finished it last weekend in just two nights and it is amazing!!! I love how real it reads and how it puts you right into the characters mind (Peter's). It's beautiful, raw, sad, disturbing and wonderful all in one. ˘ľ it! Buy it, you won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Riveting story September 15, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I tend to only write review for books that I consider outstanding (and occasionally ones that are terrible). "The End of Boys" was excellent. I zipped through it, unable to pull myself away. The writing style is very good; it felt like the author was recapturing his true "voice" from his childhood and teens very accurately, without the tone ever getting in the way of his story.

And what a story he tells! He looks back on a downward spiral of behavior as his family (particularly his parents) fill his life with contradictory and often hateful messages about his worth. I found myself holding my breath as he contemplated ever more serious actions that would turn his life and those around him into even more of a hell.

Despite all the rough and painful portions of Hoffmeister's story, his ability to look back as an adult who has been able to turn his life around is definitely inspirational. Too bad there was no one there to tell him in those early days, "It gets better."

For those who find this story riveting, I also recommend "Two Shadows" by Winger. (I found it interesting to note that both authors came out of somewhat similar backgrounds to become rock climbers in their adult years.)

3.0 out of 5 stars Feels Like Something's Missing September 27, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This was an interesting memoir of the author's transition from childhood to his out-of-control teen years, and while I laud him for his honesty in relating events that can only be painful to look back on, it felt like something was missing. Mr. Hoffmeister's relationship with his father was strained, and at times abusive. By the end of the memoir, we get a glimpse of what adult life has been like for the author, and while I'm glad he straightened himself out and everything seems to have worked out for him, I can't quite understand how he and his father finally came to terms with their differences and rebuilt their relationship. In one scene, they're ready to come to blows, the hostility between them almost palpable, and then later on, everything between them is fine. Even if no reconciliation took place between them, I would have liked a description of how Mr. Hoffmeister came to be all right with their past. However, considering that this was available as a free download, I shouldn't complain because other than that, it was an engrossing enough read.
