About the Author

DANIEL G. AMEN, M.D., is a clinical neuroscientist, psychiatrist, and brain-imaging expert who heads the world-renowned Amen Clinics. He is a distinguished fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, a regular contributer to Men’s Health, and the author of Making a Good Brain Great and the New York Times bestsellers Change Your Brain, Change Your Life and Magnificent Mind at Any Age.

More About the Author

Dr. Amen is a physician, double board certified psychiatrist, teacher and eight time New York Times bestselling author. He is widely regarded as one of the world's foremost experts on applying brain imaging science to everyday clinical practice. Dr. Amen is the Founder and Medical Director of Amen Clinics in Newport Beach and San Francisco, California, Bellevue, Washington, Reston, Virginia, Atlanta and New York City.

Amen Clinics have the world's largest database of functional brain scans relating to behavior, totaling more than 77,000 scans on patients from 90 countries.

Dr. Amen is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and is the lead researcher on the world's largest brain imaging and rehabilitation study on professional football players. His research has not only demonstrated high levels of brain damage in players, he also showed the possibility of significant recovery for many with the principles that underlie his work.

Together with Pastor Rick Warren and Drs. Mark Hyman and Mehmet Oz, Dr. Amen is also one of the chief architects on Saddleback Church's "Daniel Plan," a 52 week program to get the world healthy through religious organizations. After the first year the church lost 260,000 pounds, but weight loss was only one of the stunning side effects of getting truly healthy. Other common effects of The Daniel Plan were increased energy, better focus and mood, and a reduction of many medications for the participants. The Daniel Plan is now being exported around the world to help churches, synagogues and all religious people get healthy.

Dr. Amen is also the host of 7 popular shows about the brain, which have raised more than 44 million dollars for public television.

Dr. Amen is the author of 52 professional articles, five book chapters, and over 30 books, including eight New York Times bestsellers, including Change Your Brain, Change Your Life, Magnificent Mind At Any Age, Change Your Brain, Change Your Body, and Use Your Brain to Change Your Age. In February 2013, Crown will publish Dr. Amen's upcoming book, Unleash the Power of the Female Brain.

A small sample of the organizations Dr. Amen has spoken for include: the National Security Agency (NSA), the National Science Foundation (NSF), Harvard's Learning and the Brain Conference, Franklin Covey, The Million Dollar Roundtable, Retired NFL Players Summit, the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges and the Supreme Courts of Delaware, Ohio and Wyoming. Dr. Amen's work has been featured in Newsweek, Time, Parade Magazine, New York Times Magazine, Washington Post, LA Times, Men's Health, and Cosmopolitan.

Dr. Amen is married to Tana, the father of four children, grandfather to Elias, Julian, Angelina, Emmy and Liam. He is an avid table tennis player.

I've come out on the other side with better understanding after reading this fabulous and insightful book. This is a must read for everyone in a difficult or even a healthy relationship. It has great insight into the brain and its function. We're not all crated equal and that's the point of this book. Chemical imbalance, brain injury, it all has a great effect on our personality and our capacity for dealing with everyday life.
Good read. I highly recommend it!

Amen's "Maximize" is a comprehensive text on the brain, important to scholars, parents and anyone who wants to know how the brain works and how that knowledge can be applied. The "Love" book is a bit less scholarly, yet more insightful to the couples' niche.

THIS BOOK TEACHES THAT VARIOUS CHEMICALS WHETHER IT BE, FOR EXAMPLE, SEROTONIN, ENDORPHINS, OXYTOCIN, VASOPRESSIN, PHENYLETHYLAMINE AND MANY OTHERS DIRECTLY AFFECTS ALL OF OUR BEHAVIOR WHETHER IT BE HAPPINESS, DEPRESSION. MOODINESS OR SIMPLE CONTENTMENT. THESE CHEMICALS REACT IN OUR "FIVE DIFFERENT BRAIN SYSTEMS" (24) KNOWN AS THE DEEP LIMBIC SYSTEM, PREFONTAL CORTEX, ANTERIOR CINGULATE GYRUS, BASAL GANGLIA AND TEMPORAL LOBES. AND BECAUSE DR AMEN IS CONCERNED IN THIS BOOK WITH THE HEALTHY FUNCTION OF OUR LOVE LIFE HE WILL DISCUSS HOW LACK OF VARIOUS CHEMICALS OR TOO MUCH OF VARIOUS CHEMICALS CAN EITHER HELP OR CAUSE DYSFUNCTION IN THE WAYS IN WHICH WE RELATE SEXUALLY. THUS HE SAYS IN THE BEGINNING OF CHAPTER TWO THAT ALL OF THESE "INNER WORKINGS OF THE BRAIN INFLUENCE ALL WE DO SEXUALLY" (23).

DR AMEN HAS DONE A GREAT SERVICE FOR THOSE OF US WHO WONDER WHY SO MANY THINGS WENT WRONG WITH OUR LAST LOVE OR WHY WE STRUGGLE NOW IN OUR MARRIAGES SO MUCH. HE SAYS THIS MAY BE BECAUSE THE BRAIN ITSELF CAN "SABOTAGE" (90) RELATIONSHIPS TO SUCH AN EXTENT THAT DIVORCE COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED IF THE BRAIN HAD BEEN HEALTHY.

BUT THIS BOOK IS NOT ALL ABOUT STAYING IN LOVE AND SEX. IN HIS 12 LESSONS HE WILL ALSO DISCUSS PMS, ADD, SUBSTANCE ABUSE AND WAYS TO IMPROVE ONES BRAIN HEALTH. THIS IS A TECHNICAL BOOK ON BOTH MEN AND WOMEN AS TO WHY WE LOVE, HOW WE LOVE AND WHAT GOES ON CHEMICALLY WHEN WE LOVE. DID YOU KNOW THAT WHEN A MAN HAS A WANDERING EYE IT MAY HAVE TO DO WITH VASOPRESSION? (67) DID YOU KNOW THAT THE "PRETTIEST" BRAINS DR AMEN HAS SEEN ARE THOSE ON GINGO? THIS IS BECAUSE IT ENHANCES CIRCULATION, MEMORY AND CONCENTRATION. (153) DID YOU KNOW THAT A MAN'S BRAIN NEEDS STIMULATION WHILE A WOMAN'S IS ALWAYS WORKING AND THINKING, THINKING,THINKING? (84).

I've seen Dr. Amen give lectures. He's engaging and convincing, at least until you start to look at the actual evidence for his claims and recommendations.
Too much of what Dr. Amen writes in this book is speculation, and yet he writes it as if it were well-accepted fact. Beyond the oversold notion that SPECT scans can assist in accurate subtle psychiatric diagnosis, in this book Amen goes so far as to say "helpful" things like (under "Rules for Men on Women"), "Never ask a woman to get to the point." He purports that rules such as these for relationships are based on "the latest neuroscience research." And his application of neuroscience to men leads him to suggest that women "His is programmed to compete and win. Make him think he wins a lot." It's not just the gender-based generalizations that are a problem, either. The book is riddled with this kind of "advice."
The only reason I gave this two stars is because of his basic explanations of various neurotransmitters and the brain in general. Otherwise, this is pretty useless, and filled with Amen's leaping opinions. Look before you leap.

As a therapist, I try to give clients a way of understanding their thinking patterns and how, as couples, differences in thinking effect their relationships. This book easily and concisely gives the scientific explanations behind many emotional issues. Dr. Amen is open, humorous and 'down to earth' in his approach. He also gives specific, easy to follow prescriptions to alleviate or to work with each problem. I highly recommend this book. The Brain in Love: 12 Lessons to Enhance Your Love Life

Although the title says "12 ways to enhance your love life", much of this book is repetition of the information in his many other books which have great information on brain function. The rest of this book is an almost tongue in cheek, wink and nudge discussion how great sex is. This book offers little real help if your having problems. For example, Dr. Amen does not consider low libido anything more than malicious withholding of sex. His answer to this very intimate and serious problem is cajoling and brow beating with a wink and a "come on you know you really want it" attitude. He proudly tells of how he jokes in his lectures that withholding sex is like attempting murder (page 10). He goes on and on about how healthy sex is, and we're told that that is enough reason to do it regardless of how your feeling about it. You would think some one who studies brain function and a psychiatrist would have a better, more compassionate understanding of the complexity of libido. Books that offer real help for low libido are few, but a better place to go is "Passionate Marriage" for help with love.
