When the Lord of the Rings films began in 2001, respected action figure company Toy Biz began releasing some very decent action figures. They continued releasing figures until at least 2005, two years after The Return of the King was released, and ended up releasing around 200 different figures to create perhaps the second most complete movie action figure line ever (Star Wars figures will probably never cease to exist). While the company producing action figures for the Hobbit, The Bridge Direct, has so far not released as ambitious of a line as Toy Biz they certainly seem to have taken a cue from Toy Biz as most of their 6-7 inch scale Hobbit figures fall nicely in line with Toy Biz's figures and have a similar style. Today I am looking at Thorin Oakenshield, the leader of the company of Dwarves central to the adventure undertaken in the Hobbit:

The Facts:
Articulation- peg and post ankles, peg and post knees, ball jointed hips, waist swivel, peg and post shoulders, peg and post elbows, ball jointed head.
Accessories- wooden arm shield, dwarven sword, Orcrist (elvish sword) and sheathe, overcoat.

The positives:

*The sculpting is quite good, especially considering this is a mass market released action figure. The resemblance to the film character is quite well done and Thorin's outfit is covered with small details: The fur of his coat, the scales of his armor, and the pattern on his tunic all stand out.

*While Thorin is a small stout figure, he does have a good bit of well thought out articulation. His arms allow for a variety of poses (although wrist swivels would have been nice) and his legs do allow you to get him in a few good stances.

*The accessories are excellent.

These 6" collectibles are worth the extra couple of bucks! More detail than the smaller ones. Plausible toys, but great collectibles!

I was pretty excited to see that the bridge direct were releasing hobbit figures around the same size as the toybiz figures from the lotr trilogy, as I have a pretty massive collection. Unfortunately, they only released I believe 6 figures at the moment, and no they are not as nice looking as the lotr figures but are definitely close. Thorin looks even better in person than in the picture, and is a worthy addition to any collection. I will say that maybe 10 bucks would be a more fair price but oh well. It is definitely a nice figure. Very sturdy, and very detailed. I love it.

This is a very cool figure. The detail is very nice, especially his clothing. Fur trim accents his coat and boots. There are also some very intricate designs on his boots and armor. The paint job is very nice, and his face is a very good likeness of the movie character, in my opinion. His legs aren't very posable, but his arms have a reasonable range of motion.

He comes with several accessories. Perhaps the coolest feature is that you can stash all the accessories on the figure. His dwarven sword can be stored in a sheath on his hip, his wooden shield can be fastened on his left hand and his elvish sword, Orcist, can be stored in a sheath on his back. The swords aren't made of the bendy plastic, so no need to worry about goofy, oblong-shaped weapons.

Unfortunately, I accidentally managed to snap the pommel off of Orcist, trying to fit it into his right hand. So be especially careful when trying to wedge his weapons into his hands. Overall, this is a good figure, and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoyed the Hobbit.

Great figure, especially for the price. My son, a big fan of the movie, was very pleased with it, and I would buy it again.

Nice looking action figure with Lots of detail. Looks like the character from the movie more so than other action figures that we have seen. Cool accessories.

Received delivery of this 5.125" tall figure today from BBTS. With imposing detail and excellent articulation it is definitely more impressive than the product images do justice. So forgive me for continuing to "beat a dead troll" but how the heck did The Bridge Direct get the license for merchandising these movies? So far their figures have been great but why so few?

It just does not make sense, knowing the established market from the first trilogy, combined with the blood lust of modern merchandising campaigns, some greedy board of executives had to be drooling to the sound of thundering cash registers. I guess Toybiz spoiled me the first time around. I have most of those earlier releases and it would have been so cool to add Thorin AND COMPANY in a 6" scale.
