5.0 out of 5 stars 21st Century Blues August 9, 2011
Format:MP3 Music
The Bright Lights EP is exceptional. The opening track alone is worth the price of the entire EP, with an old school blues mentality brought through a modern filter. It is unmistakably electric, and as low down and gritty as one can get. The second song, Don't Owe You A Thang, has a driving beat and hyper-distorted guitar. The song's production is gritty and sounds like a 1950s chess record, but with added clarity. The second half of the EP is "acoustic" (though it sounds like Gary is still playing an electric guitar), the first song sounding like 1990s soul tune, with a more introverted, jazzier sound. The second song features Gary Clark's remarkable guitar playing, as he takes a blues song into different directions, going from Zeppelin to Hendrix stylistically. Buy this EP right now, especially considering the price. This artist should not be slept on any longer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Blues guitar slinger brings back Hendrix September 15, 2011
Format:MP3 Music
By Jim Clark, publisher, Lee County Courier, Tupelo, MS

The Crossroads Guitar Festival is the brainchild of Eric Clapton to showcase the talents of his peers. Rarely do up and coming artists get a spot on the roster, but E.C. made an exception in 2010 when he asked Gary Clark Jr. to play. That speaks volumes.
Gary has been compared to Hendrix and Stevie Ray and I'm comfortable with that. He grew up listening to a gumbo of John Lee Hooker, Curtis Mayfield and Snoop Dog. The results are electrifying blues, tinged with rock and wrapped in a soulful groove.
The 27-year-old native of Austin, Texas is the first prodigy I've heard worth mentioning since Kenny Wayne Sheperd.
Warner has thankfully released a four-song EP to give us a taste, with a full-CD expected in early 2012.
Gary plays the field, from the electric blues explosion of "Bright Lights" to an updated acoustic blues masterpiece "When My Train Pulls In" in the vein of classic Robert Johnson.
He's been playing guitar since age seven and was mentored by some world class players including Jimmie Vaughan. He has won the Austin Music Award for Best Blues and Electric Guitarist on three separate occasions.
This is the artist to watch for 2012.

You do not need to read words about Gary Clark, Jr.'s music. You need to hear it. This EP he released on his own is now available worldwide, and it's about time. For those who have been waiting for a young musician to take blues into the new world, creating their own style and feeling, this is the one. Do not wait. And get ready for a very long career to unfold before your very ears. Certified and guaranteed.
