Editorial Reviews

The Bright Side, Meiko's second solo release, is an intimate, fearless song-cycle about risk, regret, tenderness and love. Her indelible melodies and sharp lyrical viewpoint give The Bright Side a powerful, artistic punch. It features eleven songs that blend sumptuous folk-pop with thumping electronic beats that Meiko helped create with producers Jimmy Messer, Greg Collins and Belgian electro-pop wiz Styrofoam, known for his remixes of songs by The Postal Service and The Submarines. "The new songs were all born on the guitar, but I wanted to make this record a little more lively," she says. "We played around with beats and came up with something that people could move to. There is more color, layers and texture this time around - acoustic guitars, piano, strings, horns and background harmonies."

3.0 out of 5 stars Unnecessarily Overproduced May 16, 2012
Format:Audio CD
This is difficult. I'm a pretty big Meiko fan. I discovered her pretty early on, and I haven't stopped listening. I've seen her play Hotel Cafe 5 or 6 times, and I went to the cd release show. I would love to, blindly, give this 5 stars, but I have to be honest...this doesn't represent her at her best.

She has an amazing voice and brilliant, heartfelt songs. Give her a guitar and a stage and she'll captivate with a performance that is so real and pure that you'll feel it, deep...emotionally.

Unfortunately, on The Bright Side, someone decided to have too much fun with effects and music. Her flawless and unforgettable voice is drowned out with music that sounds like it came from a bad wedding band. With misplaced horns, overzealous echoes, and slide guitars, it's a little too Disney. Don't get me wrong, I like a good rendition of The Tiki Room as much as the next guy...just don't mess with Meiko. She's way, way too good for that.

It's not a bad cd. Her songs are great! Her voice is unmatchable! It just falls way short of her potential. If she releases an acoustic version, it'll be golden. In fact, I recommend checking out some of her live performances on youtube...before the band was added. Listen to I'm In Love or Stuck On You before the studio got ahold of it, and it'll change your life.

A lot of performers need help with heavy production and electronics...not Meiko. She's the best, pure live performer I've ever seen. This cd just doesn't do her justice.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Bright Side of My Day May 15, 2012
Format:Audio CD
The Bright Side is a fitting title for the latest addition to Meiko's blossoming catalog of euphonic gems. Unlike her self-titled 2008 installment; with its soothing, melancholy flavor; The Bright Side explodes with the confident and joyful fervor of a girl in love. "Stuck On You", "I'm in Love", and "Thinking Too Much" are invigorating love songs that embody this fervor. Throughout the album, Meiko embraces a more mature, but playful, tone---made evident on tracks such as "When the Doors Close" and "Leave the Lights On". She splices in stylistic elements that lend a retro-chic familiarity to songs like "Lie to Me", "I'm Not Sorry", and "I Wonder". The sixth track on the album, "Let It Go", feels very mainstream and very *Meiko* at the same time. While she has surely grown as a songwriter, her luscious voice continues to enchant us with each new song. On "Real Real Sweet" and "Good Looking Loser", Meiko's lyrics exude confidence while her soothing tone is reminiscent of her previous compositions. Her music seems so simple, but there are layers of complexity buried within each song that only a true craftsman like Meiko can blend together so effortlessly to create this multifaceted jewel of an album called The Bright Side. I am certainly enjoying it, and I am looking forward to more treasures from this rising star.

2.0 out of 5 stars not like her first album
I liked Meiko's first album, which had a folksy sound that highlighted her vocals. This new album overdoes teenage pop background music. I do not like the change.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love Her Voice
My husband absolutely loves listening to Meiko. As far as I'm concerned you either like her or you don't. She is very young and as she matures, so will her music.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great 2nd Album
This is a good, somewhat unexpected shift in direction. A bit happier with fleshed out compositions. A song or two can be overly giddy, but I like the overall mood and textures.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful blend of lyrics and melody
Reminds me of old school Lisa Loeb, sweet and honest. It's well written. Lyrically very strong, Meiko does not force lyrics into the song. Read more
