Chrono Trigger - Brink of Time is one CD where it's important to know what you're getting into before buying it. The music is in jazz, blues, light pop, etc. styles. If you buy this soundtrack looking for classical style, orchestrated tunes as in the Final Fantasy games then you will be thrown for a loop. It is not at all along those lines, but then again neither was much of the original music to Chrono Trigger.

These tracks are for the most part somewhat laid back. Few, if any, of them really rock, but you could say many of them groove with their smooth bass lines, funky guitar chords, and synthey melodies. All in all, it's cool hearing Chrono Trigger's music in these styles if they're your thing, but it's not nearly as dramatic as most other Square soundtracks. For me it works best as a secondary CD to pop in occasionally as a change of pace. I'm still dreaming of hearing Frog's and Magus's themes performed by a full, blasting orchestra...

Honestly, I didn't even read the description before I bought this CD. I expected a simple orchestration of the music from the game. Luckily, I am a fan of jazz, and I really like what they did with this music. The quality of the recording is top-notch. Be sure to grab this before they're all gone. You don't want to miss this, especially if you're a Chrono Trigger fan or complete-ist.

The Chrono Trigger: The Brink of Time is an album of acid jazz rearrangements of the music from Chrono Trigger, composed by Yasunori Mitsuda and arranged and performed by Hiroshi Hata, Hidenobu Ootsuki, and Gizaemon de Furuta. The Brink of Time came about because Mitsuda wanted to do something that no one else was doing. This album was released in 1995 and he noted that acid jazz and its related genres were uncommon in the Japanese market. I agree, this was an interesting way to arrange a soundtrack, but interesting doesn't always equal good. Now I confess, I have no interest in jazz, so my opinion is definitely skewed. The songs seem to come off disorganized and raspy, seemingly obscuring the original wonderful melodies. However, even I found a few really great arrangements on this Cd, which speaks volumes considering my lack of taste for Jazz. My favorite tracks are 6,8,9 and 10.

Song List:

1. Chrono Trigger - 6:13

2. Secret of Forest - 6:10

3. Zeal Palace - 4:46

4. Warlock Battle - 3:46

5. Chrono Corridor - 7:15

6. Undersea Palace - 4:09

7. World Revolution - 6:03

8. The Brink of Time - 2:45

9. Guardia Millennial Fair - 6:28

10. Outskirts of Time - 5:08

It's very fitting that this album is as complex as it is; Chrono Trigger was one of the most groundbreaking games of the decade that birthed it. This soundtrack is as much for fans of music as it is for fans of gaming. The songs comprise a fusion of sounds, from bluesy bass to overpowering jazz horn sections to killer guitar riffs. The songs are covers, not remixes, with a variety of musicians giving their own take on the songs that are so familiar to fans of the game. Of all the gaming-related albums I own, this is the best. If you're even the slightest Chrono fan or just love the game's music, you need to add this concoction of interest to your collection, the same goes for fans of the jazz genre overall.
