Book Description

The Broke Ass Brigade is a sarcastic account of the employment of The author Don Romonov in one of the larger retail chains in the world. Don entered the workforce as a young man barely out of High school, full of enthusiasm and Idealism. He was soon to receive an abrupt reality check of what corporate America is all about. Raised in the middle class, Don believed in the value system of working an honest day’s work for an honest wage. That by doing what was “right” and working hard he had no choice but to succeed. The Company Store however had other plans for Don and his coworkers- the American working class. Terrorized by crazy and vindictive bosses Don manages to maintain his sanity and sense of humor while dealing with the masses that frequent the Company Store. Illuminating the day to day interactions of the employees of the Company Store, Don details the devastating effects of poor wages, continued false promises of promotion, threats to employees that call in sick or have life threatening disabilities, and stagnate leadership that make up the culture of the Company Store.

Born with Aspergers syndrome Don brings an unusual and witty perspective to the everyday events of the Company store. While employed at the store he encounters a group of crusty and hardnosed veterans who refer to themselves as “The Broke Ass Brigade”. While talking to Don one day they spell out the demise of the American worker in the Company Store and point out the incredible injustice the corporation has handed out to the employees. Relevant in todays “Occupy Wall Street” environment, The Broke Ass Brigade was written over a period of eight years and chronicles the lives and relationships of the workers of the Company Store.
Join Don as he goes where we all have been and wondered, “Are these people for real?” Don is about to show you in a painfully sarcastic and funny way, Yes they are Very Real.

A bit tedious at times. Not much variation in the story telling so it tended to flag my interest after awhile.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Broke Ass Brigade, A Review February 21, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
These are the chronicles of a young man, who coincidentally has Aspergers, who is working for the Company Store... It who cannot be named. My words, I think.
It's not easy getting a job in North America these days, and Don Romonov tells us his experiences working for one giant, soul sucking corporation.
This author is an astute observer of human beings and was in a location full of amazing and unusual specimens of humanity that he sketches for us, quickly and competently.
He outlines the problems with corporate management thoughtfully and intelligently. It's a miracle this place continues to function. Literally a miracle as it wrings blood out of stones.
He has a wicked sense of humour that had me laughing out loud every now and then, and at one point, very near the end of the book, I laughed for five minutes. This alone was worth the price of admission.
I read some of the other reviews. Some warned about f-bombs. There are f-bombs, but they're always appropriate and tasteful.
Some reviews criticized this author's spelling, word use, or formatting, and I can say, as a person who automatically edits any book she reads, this book was well written, with few typos or spelling mistakes. There were very minor formatting problems but the storytelling was so powerful that the formatting problems were not noticible.
Mr. Romonov has an incredible wit and sense of humour. He could write dialogue for movies or tv that would be remembered forever.
He opened my eyes to the incompetence and unnecessary cruelty that goes on in the corporate store. I will be shopping there less. Much, much less.
I've had difficult times in my life, but nothing to compare with what he describes. He is to be congratulated for making lemonade out of this puppy.
In short, I loved the book. If you love people watching, astute observation and analysis, and laughing, you will enjoy this book.
I think it's a great read, and give it a Tremendous, and 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious! October 7, 2012
Format:Paperback
The Broke Ass Brigade by Don Romonov is an autobiographical journal or diary of sorts of a young man who is forced to scrimp and save just to make it in the day-t0-day world. He has to scrimp and save because he works at "The Company Store." The specific name of the store is never mentioned but it's easy enough to figure out.

Don relays his daily struggles with Asberger's Syndrome (a form of autism), making ends meet, his friends and their activities and the horrors of working at "The Company Store." This book is both terribly sad and hilarious. The stream-of-consciousness (and loaded with sarcasm) entries about the people he sees in the store and the real-life things that they do are as mystifying as they are unbelievable. I laughed out loud a number of times at things he mentioned. When I tried to read them aloud to my family, I laughed so hard I had tears streaming down my face!

Now, a word of warning, the language in the book is crass, graphic and may be offensive to some. The f- word sprinkles most of the pages. If you can get past that, this is a very entertaining read. I give it a B+.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Broke Ass Brigade December 17, 2012
Format:Paperback
Welcome to `The Broke Ass Brigade', a novel/diary about life working for the Company Store. This book is very much stream of consciousness and as such, some readers may feel as if the book jumps around a lot yet the subject changes make perfect sense. I laughed out loud at some of the events and had to read then aloud to my spouse (then we were both cracking up!). Through a unique point of view, Mr. Romonov highlights a majority of what is wrong in this country right now. From the slave-driving and incompetent managers, the overworked and underappreciated employees, and the ridiculously sad customers, the author has truly captured what it is to work in one of the largest retail chains in the world. I thought some of my experiences in the retail world were bad, but they doesn't even compare. `The Broke Ass Brigade' is funny, sad, and touching - a must read! Be warned: there is graphic language and situations which are not appropriate for children. This is definitely an adult-only book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Memories December 16, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I enjoyed this book greatly. Reminded me way too much of retail experiences I had and my time working with a rival "Company Store." So many people in Mr. Romonov's book were real in my world as well. Those days melting together with desperate attempts to relax on days off were memories that are terrible and wonderful. And the store managers... I remember one I referred to as Wonder Weeny. He would pose like Superman, hands on hips with feet spread wide but missing the cape, each morning he came in and inspect everybody coming to or leaving from their shifts. Thanks for bringing back those memories... I think.

5.0 out of 5 stars i'm still in pain from laughing June 10, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
okay i've got to admit while the author did open my eyes about "the company store" and what they do to people i primarily enjoyed it because of the characters and ESPECIALLY for the many, many, hysterical belly laughs it gave me. I am lowbrow enough to say proudly that i find farts and pooping so hilarious that as i was reading i scared the cat off the bed with my cackling.
i read a lot of these "free books" and have enjoyed many but i dont keep them on my kindle i delete when done but, i will save this book and hope i forget the story so that some year i may again read this book. thank you don
