You may note that there are numerous 5 star reviews for this book and that they are descriptive and pretty convincing. You may also note that many of the reviewers have written very few reviews, thus raising some doubts regarding the value of those reviews. As someone who doesn't know the author and has previously offered quite a few reviews for consideration, I submit that those reviews, regardless of source or motivation, were pretty much on target. I personally found this book to be a well written action novel that grabbed me and held my interest. The racial and moralistic issues that provide the framework for this story provide plenty of food for thought. My rating is probably conservative--the 5 star reviews are not unreasonable.

Mr. Martin-Zerf was a serious participant in the events of which he writes. The inner struggles of his main character have the ring of truth, and I suspect more than a bit of autobiography in them. Colonialism is another of the evil "isms" that have plagued humanity through the ages, and South Africa is a primary example of that. It had been a while since I had read any book, fiction or non-fiction, centered on South Africa, the horrors of apartheid, and the brutality of the struggle that ultimately ended it, at least as a matter of law. This is a difficult book to read in many ways, but I think an essential one for we in the West to whom Africa in general is a problem we either ignore or wish would just go away. It is also an extremely exciting novel putting everything else aside; the author knows how to tell a story, and that is his main focus. The issues he implicitly addresses simply come through as they are essential to the tale.

As an aside, for a superb non-fiction history of apartheid told through the eyes of a major Boer family member clearly viewed as a traitor by his people, I strongly recommend, despite its age, "White Tribe Dreaming." by Marq de Villiers, an exploration of how apartheid developed through 8 generations of an Afrikaner family. It is a great complement to "The Broken Men."

Please read "The Broken Men." It has my highest recommendation. We human beings simply MUST learn to value, or at least to understand one another, regardless, or indeed because of, our different races, ethnicities, cultures and belief systems. We will live together or we will die separately, as we are again doing across the world, to my great sorrow.

An unrelenting page turner, this book will grip your heart and fill your head long after you've finished it. Complex relationships, gritty realism, detailed history that many of us will have had no idea about. Media interpretations of the country that has been faced with conflict and violence show a very one sided, simplistic version of SA. It is harsher, more cruel than this media presentation. With characters that you feel you knew, here, in well written prose, you will have a front row seat. Uncompromising in its truth, often gruesomely violent, this is definitely a must read.

Unputdownable. Gripping. Deep and insightful. This is not your usual run of the mill thriller. Although the action starts on the first page and doesn't stop until the very last page this novel, is about so much more than simply violence and destruction. It is also a very human story. We are shown first hand the effects of war on friendships and how the system of apartheid in South Africa destroyed the very heart of the people and the country. However - this book can also be read on a more surface level as a straight bang-up action adventure. Marten-Zerf keeps us on the very edge of our seats as the story goes from the war in Africa to a final vicious confrontation in England that results in an ending that will leave you breathless. This book totally deserves the full 5 stars and I look forward to reading his next one.

Not my normal cup of tea, but surprisingly engaging! A military spree that actually had me caring about the characters, their world, and the origins of their wold view(s). While enjoying myself with the author's well drawn characters, superb timing, and masterful choice of detail, I also learned a great deal about South Africa and the macho nations of war. Really fantastic. As soon as I get back on my good old solid ground, I'm going in for a reading of his next book. Different and decidedly worth it!

This story is a bit raw and uncut at times, but just enough to get a taste of the real heart of South Africa. I can easily appreciate the rising strength of the characters. I was mesmerized by their overall fight and courage. I can see why this series is such a success, especially after the passing of Nelson Mendela. I'm in absolute awe of how they dealt with their harsh circumstances, and am looking forward to more Marten-Zerf books in the future.

Great novel, shows the true behavior of men in battle, both the good and bad. Small warfare but intense. Good comradeship between the men who risks thier lives with and for each other, bad in that in war innocents suffer, getting killed, wounded, raped, etc.
Set in South Africa with local flavors and phrases it shows the manly virtues of courage, loyalty, and friendship. The author draws real persons with real dialoge and mannerisms so that the story is alive and makes one feel that they are in the club of Broken Men.
