5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant and beautiful at any time. January 6, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I skipped the Brontes when my peers were enthralled with their tales. And so, am as delighted, as they then were, to enjoy dive in 40 years later to confirm that great literature stands the test of time and the ages. Thank-you amazon for making this book so affordable. I do hope many will, therefore partake of it and keep the tales of the Brontes alive for generations to come!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Large February 11, 2010
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This is a pretty book, but quite large...not exactly good for curling up in bed to read...BUT...for the price it is great to have all of the novels of these three Bronte sisters. With no concerns about money, I'd buy the books individually for happier reading and better portability...this one is the size of a college textbook and heavy...not great for taking with you. It is pretty though, and the illustrations are beautiful...taken from various editions of the individual books, and they are labeled so that you know who the illustrator is, which book and edition it was taken from. I learned from buying this book though that for reading, I prefer individual paperbacks...but this one might hold up longer to multiple readings. Seems to be a good quality, and my little ones are fascinated by the gilded page edges...so shiny! (Which in itself is a little dangerous because they keep wanting to look in the book now and see if there are any other shiny treasures inside...)...a mixed bag.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Bronte Sisters December 24, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
It is always preferable to know more about the life of the authors. Thus one could better relive and even feel the emotions and struggles surrounding the Bronte Sisters' grand literary works. Their timeline is an entire era, their novels are classic, their style and talent are exquisite. But above all, their impact on humanity worldwide is enormous and unmatched even in the 21st century. I do recommend their books to all language students and explorers, as well as real connoisseurs.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Sisters November 6, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I enjoyed this anthology of writing by and about the Bronte Sisters. It was especially good after several reads to read Wuthering Heights one more time, this time with new knowledge about it from the correspondence and other writing about the Brontes. Thank you, publisher, for putting this together.

4.0 out of 5 stars A few great novels, a few real bores September 11, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
5 stars for Wuthering Heights, one of my all time favorite books. I've read this book as least five or six times over the last forty years, and have come away with different impressions, but it's always fascinating. It's my idea of beach reading, since I've read at least three times on the beach. But now that I think about it, probably the best place to read it in a bare cabin the middle of nowhere on a windswept and barren landscape. Maybe next time.

4 stars for Jane Eyre. An interesting novel, even a great one that probably deserves 5 stars, except that it pales beside Wuthering Heights.

4 stars for the Tenant of Wildfell Hall: I first read this novel 40 years ago, when it had been all but forgotten. For the first half, I thought I discovered a neglected masterpiece. Ann Bronte does a great job when telling the story from perspective of a man who takes in an interest in a scorned woman. But oddly enough, the story falls apart when the narrative shifts to the scorned woman's perspective. All the sympathy I felt for the heroine ( when she was presented through the man's perspective ) died when she told her own story of her mistreatment at the hands of her husband. She comes off as such a self-righteous shrew that it's easy to see why her husband ( at first good natured but irresponsible ) soon takes haven in liquor, gambling and womanizing. Well of course. She drove him to it!!! When all is said and done, Ann Bronte was a bit of self-righteous and moralizing prude. Still, the story is a good one ( especially the first half ) and worth reading, and I'm glad to see that it's has gained in popularity over the years.

Agnes Gray: 4 stars. Not nearly as interesting as The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, but not nearly as unwittinlgy self righteous either. A good read.

As for the rest, I was never able to get through them. Aside from Janey Eyre, Charlotte Bronte was pretty boring.

Who am I to quarrel with the opinions of so many more erudite readers, I loved this book from the very first page and found it more readable than most books of that era ; in fact some of the constructions of words only added to its charm.
I have not, however, been able to navigate this massive edition yet to get to the works of Anne and Emily. But I did discover that Charlotte's autobiographer is a woman named Gaskell and that she is the author of "Cranston" which was wildly popular in the 19th century. "Cranston" was dramatized recently on PBS' Masterpiece Theater.
I have to go now and call those helpful people at Kindle' customer service for advice on how to access the other books in this edition'
I give this book an unequivocal FIVE STARS;

How can anything from the Bronte sisters not be wonderful? So happy I could download all of the novels and have them at my finger tips whenever I wish to read material from the 19th century. I'm immediately transported to an enchanting time/place.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great gift! February 20, 2011
By Freda
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I gave this to an English major for Christmas. She had alot of the books already - but still loved the gift. The book itself is gorgeous- leather bound with gold edges on the pages. However, this is not the type of book you want to read with just one hand. The book is huge (and I don't mean thick - although it is thick as well). It is probably about 13-15 inches tall and about 8-10 inches long - maybe bigger on both of those dimensions. I would still get it again for any person who loves classic literature.
