THE BROOD is an early film for director David Cronenberg who is perhaps now better known for his dramatic films such as A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE, EASTERN PROMISES, and A DANGEROUS METHOD. But, as most of us know, he started his career making what is known as Venereal Horror, or Body Horror. THE BROOD is an excellent example.

The film deals with the sudden appearance of disfigured child murderers who terrorize a Toronto family that is going through a difficult divorce. The wife, Nola (played by Samantha Eggar), is at a psychological retreat where she is being treated by Psychiatrist Hal Raglan (played by Oliver Reed), who has pioneered "psychoplasmics". After spending the weekend with Nola, her husband Frank (played by Art Hingle) discovers that there are bruises and scratches on their daughter's back. He immediately goes to Raglan, tells him that he will not be bringing his daughter anymore and believes that Raglan's techniques are hurting Nola. Two murders ensue, and a startling and horrifying conclusion is made that the evil may be closer to home than they think...

THE BROOD is an excellent film with a beautifully eerie score by Cronenberg regular Howard Shore. It looks and sounds beautiful, especially in Criterion's loving HD restoration. It's plenty creepy, and this reviewer wishes that Criterion would take the next step and release both THE BROOD and SCANNERS on the format they truly deserve: Criterion Blu-Ray. But in the mean time, if you're looking for a creepy winter horror yarn, look no further than David Cronenberg's THE BROOD, here on demand. Make sure you watch it in HD. It's beautiful.

You cannot call yourself a Horror fan until you've seen this. It has the great slow lead up to the shocking end, and actually the effects are good. A must see!!

I'm a horror/thriller author and I always state The Brood as one of the films which gave me purpose and a plan. The Brood (1979) is good, classic horror. Some of the creepiest scenes ever recorded on film! DO NOT MISS...it's a must for all horror lovers!

Long before Existenz or The Fly, Videodrome...even two years before Scanners, this movie served as documentation that David Cronenberg was already what we call in the film industry, "a funny one." Just a little mad. He's writer and director and trust me, in 1979 no studio exec was leaning over his shoulder and saying, "Listen to me for once, Davey, when we say you have to climax the film with a mentally ill woman gnawing open her own extracorporeal gestation sac while in the other room her offspring, all of them about the size and shape of six-year-olds, but with hideously deformed faces we never get a clear look at, these offspring are brutally attacking the enigmatic Dr Raglan (Oliver Reed), whose fiendish experiments have brought this whole tragic situation about. If you love Cronenberg, you really should see this!

You won't see anything like it, as absurd as it is and as hokey the little weird kid-midget's makeup is. There you have it. It's Cronenberg and that means it's weird. So... if you like that, you'll like this.
