This biography/autobiography was amazing. It pulls you in right from the beginning and keeps you there. It is a sad book, but it has happy times and it can make you laugh and cry. The Brooke Ellison Story was very well written. Each chapter switches back and forth from the daughters' perspective, to the mothers' perspective. It was absolutely wonderful.

On Brooke Ellison's first day of seventh grade she was hit by a car on her way home from school and left paralyzed from her neck down, and relying on a respirator for her every breath. This story tells how she made it through, and 10 years later graduated from college.

Reading this book has opened my eyes to reality, and what happens almost every day to people around the world. Reading this book, on how she lived was astonishing. All the things Brooke accomplished even though she was paralyzed, was amazing.

"Try to imagine being in a chair with your feet bound and your hands tied behind your back. Then imagine being on a machine that gives you thirteen breaths per minute and doesn't allow you to sigh, or take a deep breath when you feel you need one. Then imagine never being able to use the bathroom or shower when you want to, to brush you teeth, feed yourself, scratch an itch, or wipe your eyes if you need to cry. Imagine never having any privacy, not being able to be physically intimate, or never being able to hug someone when you really want to. Compound that with sleepless nights when you are unable to breathe, equipment failures that threaten your life, and wheelchair malfunctions that leave you stranded in bed.

This is a great story of triumph. Brooke has excelled in so many ways and her mother is to be commended for all that she did for her daughter. Being a parent is all-consuming even when the child is not disabled; I can't imagine being with my daughter ALL the time, even at college with her. I wish them the best for a happy future.

Great story! I read this book during a nursing course I took in college and also got this book for my mom for Christmas. Easy read that is short to moderate in length (aka page count). The book is well written. The plot is good that has an emotional roller coaster built in. There is some sad, some scary, and awful but a lot of laughs and happy moments as well. During our college course we were focused on the care the Brooke received while in the hospital. It is good to focus on the kind of care she received to understand what kind of nurse you don't want to have/be. If you are looking for a story about determination and overcoming personal tragedy then this is book is a great option for you. If you are a nursing student then this is a fantastic book for you and/ or your class. Great perspective. Doesn't matter if you are a medical student or any other kind of reader. This is a wonderful book and I recommend it fully. Also available in movie format for really cheap here on Amazon.(Was $4 and some change when I bought it in 2014). ENJOY!

I could not express in words the feeling I had upon reading the book (and watching the movie) -- what courage and strength the human body and spirit possess and what challenges that cn be overcome with sheer desire and determination -- I hope you will read the book and watch the movie (directed by Christopher Reeves) -- with hops that they make it to the best sellers list and video awards!!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND FOR EVERYONE (This book & movie should be on every High School required reading/viewing LIST) -- Bob

I live here in NY and if it weren't for the fact that I, myself am currently attending college, I would run to her house every day of my life. This book motivated me because she shows that anything is possible if you just put the dedication and attention to it. I am totally floored by her mother in this book every time I think about it. It is a MUST for u to read this book!
