A great work of literature that probes the characters' psychology in detail. Dostoevsky also includes thought-provoking debates among his characters about religion and faith, morality and guilt. At times I felt like the story got bogged down in long discussions, but there are some wonderful sections with stunning writing and emotional high points.

Extremely dense and dark rendition of humans in their greed mode. Not for romantics or those tlooking for fast fcition. This takes time and energy and it pays off.

Several years ago I made a concerted effort to upgrade the quality of my reading material. I wasn't exactly a comic book aficionado; however I had failed to read most of the classics during my years of formal education. Since that time, I've read more than my fair share of Dickens, Steinbeck and Hemingway. I've also dabbled in some of the more recently highly acclaimed literature, happily in some cases, in others not so much. Several months ago, I read the author's highly acclaimed Crime and Punishment, and after a period of acclimation, was not disappointed. With that experience, I came to this novel with relatively high expectations.

Now, it should be noted that the purpose of my reading is predominantly for pleasure and entertainment. I enjoy acquiring some historical education if such is a by-product of the experience, but it is not my aim or intention to delve deeply into philosophy or existentialism. As noted, I have read and enjoyed Dickens but will never take on the chore of trying to decipher Sartre, Camus or Nietzsche. That said, I found this novel to be moderately entertaining, with periods of great enjoyment interspersed with sometimes long passages of dense, philosophical meanderings; more so than the author's Crime and Punishment, which was not without such interludes, but which tended to be shorter and more widely dispersed.

The book follows the life of the Karamozov family; the slightly unbalanced, sensual and erratic father and his three vastly different sons, Dmitry, Ivan and Alexyev. As the novel progresses, a notorious turn of events results in a murder trial against one of the brothers.

A beneficial classic in theological and psychological issues. My copy is 1045 pages, so it took me a week and a half to finish while on a vacation. There's no doubt in my opinion in Dostoevsky's remarkable ability to convey each character's psychological makeup, each perceiving their situations slanted from their particular viewpoints, some mildly, others to the extreme, distorting facts with personal objectives.

The story is about three brothers, a fourth illegitimate child and brother, the father, two women who play key roles and the murder of the father. The other main characters who play key roles in this story are also described in detail by Dostoeovsky. However, the key elements of this story relate into the psychological and theological issues raised.

The story, which is about three brothers and their fathers murder, enters into the psychology of each character relating to Dostoevsky and the question of God. One of the more important chapters is that entitled "The Grand Inquisitor." In this chapter Ivan relates a Christ as teaching a Christianity which equals radical absolute freedom, which differs sharply from the traditional interpretation of Christ. Here Ivan interprets the Grand Inquisitor, the Cardinal, as the representative of the Church hierarchy as the three areas rejected by Christ in the desert offered him after his baptism. And so the Grand Inquisitor is the teacher of miracles, mystery and authority, which are the absolute and necessary tools needed to unify humanity, in that spiritual bread alone will never unify the world, while physical bread will.

Brothers K is a great book that includes a little of everything, romance, crime, philosophy, spirituality and a great plot. The three brothers are totally different personalities that represent a lot of what we find in humanity.
