Editorial Reviews

From the Indian Wars to the Spanish-American War, relive the heroism, drama and adventure of the legend of the Buffalo Soldier.

This outstanding documentary, which won the CINE Golden Eagle Award and the Bronze Cindy Award, chronicles the history and accomplishments of the all-black cavalries and infantries during the last half of the 19th century. Named the "Buffalo Soldiers" by their Cheyenne enemies, these brave and proud soldiers played an important role in the pacification and settlement of the American West, as well as many other military adventures in the 1800's.

Filmed on location where it actually happened over 100 years ago, and utilizing a rare collection of authentic Buffalo Soldier photographs -- the largest collection of its kind ever assembled -- the amazing story of the Buffalo Soldier is brought to life for the enjoyment of generations to come.

This production also includes the speech by General Colin Powell, then Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, dedicating the Buffalo Soldier Memorial at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, finally recognizing their substantial contribution to our national heritage.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent October 1, 2013

The other side of history that needs to be told regarding people of color. Current history classes dismiss or ignor the contributions made by these Americans. If all Americans were educated with truth we would turn this nation around in regards to race hatred and bias. Another hidden truth is found in the story of the 55th of Mass. in the movie " Glory".

Informative video that provided high level overview of Buffalo Soldiers. Information provided pertaining to the monument in Kansas and Colin Powell's involvement and dedication towards getting it erected was insightful. I would say this is a great learning tool for school age children of any age and for adults that would like a high level introduction to the Buffalo Soldiers.

I like this documentary. If you like the history of the West, military history, or black history, I think you'll enjoy watching this DVD. Documentary tells the history of black soldiers to the Spanish American War. Ends with a speech from General Powell during the dedication of a statue at Ft. Leavenworth during the 1990s.
