Editorial Reviews

Review

“This book is an indispensable tool and support for parents of children dealing with bullying issues in school. Ed Dragan empowers parents to take action and protect their children from harassment and teaches them to intervene effectively with teachers and principals.”--Jodee Blanco, New York Times bestselling author of Please Stop Laughing At Me

“In my work I see many understandably frustrated parents become desperate to figure out how to enlist the school when their child is bullied. How should they approach the teacher? What happens if the teacher won't recognize the problem? What should you do if the school refuses to do anything to stop the bullies? The Bully Action Guide fills a critical gap in the resources available for parents. Not only does it provide clear strategies for when to approach educators but how. The book is filled with simple yet powerful scripts for parents to use to clearly communicate their child's rights and hold educators responsible in a way that gives the parent the best chance of working in collaboration with the school. I am strongly recommending this book for all parents.”—Rosalind Wiseman, author of Queen Bees and Wannabes

"The Bully Action Guide is a must-have for anyone who is concerned about a child being bullied. Offering calm but effective dialogue templates, a "chain of command" hierarchy to follow when results aren't forthcoming at one level, and tips on what to document and how, Dr. Dragan provides the steps to help both parents and authorities communicate more effectively."--Cheryl Dellasega, author of Mean Girls Grown Up

The Bully Action Guide is a priceless resource for any parent, grandparent and family member wanting to ensure their child's safety.”--Maureen Healy, author of 365 Perfect Things to Say to Your Kids

“A most important book for any parent whose child is being bullied! No other book gives parents such sensible, easy–to-follow guidance for helping a child who's being bullied, and effectively communicating with a school to end the bullying. A must-read.”--Naomi Drew, author of No Kidding about Bullying

“Bullying is not a rite of passage; it is abuse that must be stopped. Dragan skillfully provides “how to’s” that parents can follow to protect their children at school. Who to call, what to say, questions to ask and scripts to follow – words so potent that they cannot be ignored.  You want this pro on your team in times of trouble. He is telling you exactly how schools operate and how to get what you need. Listen and be safe!”--Mary Jo McGrath, author of School Bullying: Tools for Avoiding Harm and Liability

“Dragan’s book places into the hands of parents orderly, common sense procedures to effectively communicate with their child and with the school to end bullying. It is time for a step-by-step proven system to give parents the edge when dealing with school administrators and teachers. This book gives parents much needed tools, so that schools will not only listen to them, but act to stop the bullying for their child.”--Brenda High, Co-director and Founder of watchdog organization Bully Police USA

I wish this book existed five years ago when my child was going through severe bullying issues at school. I tried to handle things with the school as best I knew how, and I got nowhere with the school. I know now from this book that my lack of progress was probably because I wasn't communicating with administrators in a way that would make them hear me.

This book lays out step-by-step methods for finding out what is happening with your child and then working cooperatively with the school to put an end to the bullying. Certain things get administrators' attention, and through this book you learn what those are and how to use them to your child's advantage. It's to the school's advantage to work with you as well, and smart administrators are going to know that. I believe the methods in this book can be very effective.

Perhaps equally important, Dr Dragan's book dispels the notion that responsibility for ending the bullying falls on the victim. "Ignore it," "toughen up," "hit him back," I used to tell my own child. None of that works; for my child, all it did was perpetuate the trouble. The victim can't stop the problem. And the bully won't stop because he thrives on the high he gets from being "in power." The only one with the power to do something about it is the school. This book shows you how to make the school act.

As the Director of the upcoming film " The Bully Project" being released by the Weinstein Company - I highly recommend this book, to all parents and educators. What the author has done is create a empathetic, yet directed guide to help parents and schools navigate the very difficult terrain of bullying in American Schools - How do you advocate for you child in the face of unsympathetic administrators? This is the key question addressed and the resources provided compound to create a powerful toolkit for families nationwide.

As a parent of a teenager who has been bullied throughout most of his school years, I found this book to be extremely helpful. What can be the most difficult and frustrating is navigating your way through the schools administration. This book was able to provide me with clear and concise ways to reach the attention of the individuals that I needed to in order to obtain a positive outcome for my child. As a social worker as well who works with children, I will be able to use this book as a resource to help other children and their families who face the same challenges.

We are parents of a child who was bullied in high school. It had affected our entire family for about eight months. The bullies don't realize the impact that their actions have on the victim and their loved ones. Even though one can heal and move on with their life, you are always impacted by the bullying actions. For our family, we have moved on in a positive way to reach out to other families and those who are bullied to guide them. For our child, she has decided to try to help and advocate the affects of bullying and has become a strong person because of what happened. Dr. Dragan was there for us at that time and without him we would not have been able to have a resolution; we are forever grateful to him. His book shows a true testament for how to help families dealing with bullying and we highly recommend not only parents but also school personel to read his book.

I am attorney who repesents children who have been bullied at school. The stories I hear are unfortunaely painful, but must be told, not only as we do in Court, but as has Dr. Dragan, in this remarkeable and practical book. After attempting to assure for the safety of their own child, every single parent I deal with says the same thing; "we just want to make sure no one else has to go through what our child has gone through." The problem of bullying is somewhat of a misnomer, it is really more akin to "torture. This book is a "must read" for any person interested in the issue, including and especially School Board personnel, who think about bullying as a "rights of passage" issue and not the torture, it is in actuality. School Board personnel have the duty to assure the safety of our children. After you read this book, make sure to give one a copy.

Format: Paperback
Edward Dragan's book is a must read for both parents and educators. Bullying is a nationwide problem. Despite the prevalence of bullying, few resources are available that serve as a guide to parents and educators trying to deal with or address bullying problems. The techniques and insight provided by Dr. Dragan are informative and can make a difference and impact for a child who is the unfortunate victim of bullying. Few books aim to change and better the lives of victims or potential victims of bullying acts. Even fewer books succeed in making a difference. Hats off to Dr. Dragan for committing his time and expertise to such an important subject matter. David Wolf, Child Injury Lawyer, Jacksonville, Florida

I was in high school in the 60's when bullying was either accepted or addressed by "fight back". That solution found me locked in a gym locker more times than I wish to recall. I wrote a children's musical some 40 years later with bullying as the theme and so I was very interested in reading Ed Dragan's book. It is quite wonderful and while I wish it was around when I was a kid, I'll glad it's here now for the baby-boomers to read and share with their children. The book is concise and pro-active, which is exactly what is required of a book designed to actually help rather than merely discuss. I highly recommend it. Not a light, summer read --- but a very important one.
