Product Description
I love writing short stories that have lots of twists and turns, and that don't turn out the way readers expect, and I think “The Bully” is one of my best examples of this. I particularly enjoyed writing the character of Jonathon's father, who would be a very strong candidate for the Worst Dad of the Year award. While “The Bully” has plenty of dark, twisted humor, ultimately I think it's one of the saddest stories I've ever written. I'd love to hear what readers think of it (through my website)!

Jason Starr is the author of eight crime thrillers which are published in ten languages. His first novel, COLD CALLER was selected as a Publisher's Weekly First Fiction pick, and in the critical work, Twentieth Century Crime Fiction, (Oxford University Press, 2005), author Lee Horsley selected COLD CALLER as one of the basic texts for discussion. Jason's second novel, NOTHING PERSONAL was hailed as the best novel of the year by Bookends. Time Out called Jason's third novel, FAKE I.D., “a powerful novel of the American Dream turning into the American Nightmare.” His fourth novel, HARD FEELINGS was a “Penzler Pick” and the first ever original novel published by Vintage Crime/Black Lizard. TOUGH LUCK, Jason's fifth novel, was an Anthony Award finalist and won the Barry Award for best paperback. Jason's sixth novel, TWISTED CITY, was a Barry Award finalist and an Anthony Award winner for best paperback. In 2006, Jason's novel LIGHTS OUT was published to wide acclaim by St. Martin's Press and is now available in paperback. Also in 2006, Hard Case Crime published BUST, a crime novel that Jason wrote with Irish novelist Ken Bruen (BUST was an IMBA bestseller), and he co-edited BLOODLINES, a collection of stories and essays on horse racing, for Vintage Books that was semi-finalist for the Thoroughbred Times Book Award. Jason's latest thriller THE FOLLOWER, called “this generation's Looking for Mr. Goodbar” by Page Six of the New York Post, is due from St. Martin's Press in August 2007. Jason was born and raised in Brooklyn and now lives in Manhattan.

This story will send you back to those days in a flash. If the principal can't do anything to protect you, and your parents won't, then you are totally at the mercy of the bully. Adapted by director, Shane McNeil, and to be produced by Kristian Moliere (Boxing Day) The Bully is a suburban noir about an overweight 14 year-old boy who is the victim of schoolyard bullying. When he turns to his father for advice, things go from bad to worse... "What initially attracted us to The Bully was that it had a lean, spare narrative, was tightly plotted with moments of real suspense and shock and that it centred upon a complex and complicated protagonist--all of which I felt would form a strong foundation for cinematic adaptation, " said Shane McNeil. The Bully was recently selected for production funding by the South Australian Film Corporation under their Short Film Production initiative. The film will be shot in late 2008 for release in early 2009. Rising Sun Pictures (who have done VFX for Harry Potter, Batman Begins, Superman Returns, Lord of the Rings, etc) have co-partnered with Smoking Gun Productions on post production. Smoking Gun Productions have also optioned Jason Starr's first novel, Cold Caller, which Jason is currently adapting. Kristian said, "We are very excited to be continuing our collaboration with Jason and look forward to taking our first step into production with The Bully."
