My grandmother had only one children's book for us to read when we visited her. Having raised her family as a sharecroppers wife during the depression, she made sure that what she bought was worth having.
The Watty Piper's Bumper Book speaks for itself.
I can still see Christopher Robin saying his prayers and peeking at Nanny's dressing gown.
The illustrations of Wynken, Blynken and Nod are what beautiful dreams are made of.
I wish I had been the one who got Mamo's Bumper Book when she died.

A beautifully illustrated book of the 1930's-40s, this children's anthology contains such classic poems as: "Winken, Blynken, and Nod", "The Swing" by Robert Louis Stevenson, " The Owl and the Pusseycat", "Animal Crackers", ABC poem, and many other poems and stories that are easy to understand and read. The rhyming is simple and provide excellent "read-aloud" opportunities as well as individual reading for enjoyment. One of the better features of the book is the illustrations. The beautiful illustrations of each poem and story are colorful, warm and friendly. The style reflects the graphic art of the 30s- 40s and can only be described as warm and charming, inviting one to reflect upon the values of the time and realize that these values should still be seen and cultivated in children's literiture today.

I had "My Bumper Book" growing up. My sister, my brother & I had memorized it & knew most of the book by heart. By the time my children were ready for it, it had become very well used. My children learned it as well. I am the only one with the book. I don't think it will make it for my grandchildren (at least 5 yrs., please). It would be wonderful if it could be reprinted! I know of no child who could resist "A short fat Grandmama with a very slippery knee" & "Animal crackers with cocca to drink".

As a child, my mother read this book to me countless times because I loved it so much. I have been trying to find one for years for my own children's book collection, because I firmly believe no collection is complete without this book. It is full of quality and classic poems, stories, tales, and beautiful pictures. I'm 19 now and this book was my favorite book by far as a child and made such an impression on me that I still want it today. I recommend it to anyone. You will NOT be dissapointed!

My Mom picked this book out for me at a thrift store in 1967 (where I bought all my soldiers). I carried it around for the next three years. It was my biggest treasure (besides my Uncle Funny Bunny).

This book was a gift to me when I was a little girl. I am 53 now and still remember the illustrations that went with each rhyme. It was the first book that I memorized and read until the cover came off. I bought it for my children and they loved it. It is a classic. I wish I had bought enough to save for grandchildren. It breaks my heart that it is out of print.

My wellworn volume is taped together and ragged at the edges, but I still occasionally re-read these classic stories and poems. The illustrations are beautiful and the text is truly classic. Some of my favorites are "Wynken, Blynken, and Nod," "Animal Crackers and Cocoa for Tea," "The Gingham Dog and the Calico Cat," and "Christopher Robin is Saying His Prayers" (hush, hush, whisper who dares!) Thanks, mom, for letting me take this one!

I have the original version and it has been loved to death by myself and my children. I will pass it on to my grandchildren. The stories and drawings are pure love and heart. They provide the best of childhood to a new generation of readers.

Ahhhh, I am only 30 but this brings back a tidal wave of childhood nostalgia :) The illustrations are SO memorable, the stories SO charming. Sigh. I wish children still read books like this...

My four children loved the Bumper Book when they were young, My existing copy now is worn thin as they all wanted to read the stories every night and over and over again. When my newest granddaughter was born, my daughter said she had looked everywhere but could not find the book in stores and it had been her favorite. I was pleased to find a copy online and was well worth the investment to see my daughter's face when she unwrapped it at Christmas with a shout of joy, and know my granddaughter will be as enthralled with the stories as my own children were. The stories are timeless, and their innocence for young children is so needed. I cannot get through some of them, especially the Lame Squirrel's Thanksgiving without shedding a tear myself.
