Book Description

September 27, 2011
A PROVOCATIVE AND INSIGHTFUL PORTRAIT OF THE BEAUTIFUL, FREE-SPIRITED, AND SURPRISINGLY INDEPENDENT WOMEN OF THE ICONIC PLAYBOY CLUBS

The 1960s were a time of change in America, an era when safely guarded innocence gave way to explosive social revolution. For Kathryn Leigh Scott, or Bunny Kay as she was known in the New York City Playboy Club, and the more than 250 former Bunnies she interviewed for this book, donning satin ears and a fuzzy cottontail was an act of liberation—a chance to bridge the gap between being girls and becoming women, to earn more money than their own mothers ever fathomed, and to find their way in a world that would never be the same. Lauren Hutton was a Bunny. Deborah Harry was too. Bunnies went on to become doctors, lawyers, stockbrokers, real estate tycoons, nurses, scientists, entrepreneurs, and teachers.

Called “a smart oral history” by Esquire and “entertaining” by Entertainment Weekly, The Bunny Years goes beyond Gloria Steinem’s infamous magazine exposé, “A Bunny’s Tale,” beyond detailed instructions for perfecting the “Bunny Dip” and providing Keyholders with “efficient, friendly, personalized service,” to explore, in the words of the remarkable women themselves, what it really meant to be a Bunny.

Kathryn is also the author of "The Bunny Years," a memoir covering her years as a Bunny in the New York City club, which includes interviews with other former Bunnies. It has been optioned for potential use for the NBC series "Playboy Club" and Simon & Shuster is releasing the paperback version fall 2011. Kathryn has also authored a number of "Dark Shadows" memorabilia books. As a publisher, Kathryn founded Pomegranate Press which offers non-fiction and entertainment titles.

I bought this book after watching "A Tale of Two Bunnies" on ABC sparked my curiosity. I thought it was just going to be a bunch of ex-bunnies telling stories about the club but the book went beyond that. It managed to discuss the beginnings of the club, the evolution of the bunny costume, the training of the women who worked there, advantages of working in the club, and the kind of women that were hired. It was fascinating to see so many different races and backgrounds being sought in the 60's. Of course it had personal tales (no pun intended) along with the whole "where are they now" bit. The pictures are wonderful and at times very candid. I recommend this to anyone who wants to know the real deal behind the ears.

Kathryn Leigh Scott has managed to write an insider's look at being a Bunny in one of the famed Playboy Bunny Clubs (New York!!). It isn't what you expect. It's all about the hard work, the costumes(that alone is priceless!!)and of course the customers. You feel like you are stuffing yourself into that suit, slapping on the ears, collar, etc... and then marching out to do one of the hardest jobs in the world: waitressing. She has absolutely no regrets about being a Bunny (BRAVO!!) and the stories about her customers and Bunny Mother, the description of the club late at night with the smoke-filled rooms and music take you right inside. More power to these women who chose to make a living earning more money than their own parents at times so they could pursue their real dreams! Stepping off the farm onto the streets of New York to be an actress (and boy did she hit the jackpot w/Dark Shadows!)is scary, exciting, and she was daring, never hesitating. Shame on Gloria Steinheim (aka FAKE BUNNY) for berating these hard-working women who had visions of "respectable" careers, paying their own way and THEY DID IT!!!
A must-read for any Bunny fan or someone who wants to go to NY or know that the saying "if you can make it in New York, you can make it anywhere" is absolutely true!

I thought this was a very good book. It showed so many women who have made great contributions with their lives after getting started in what was not an easy job. Waiting tables is not easy, especially in high heels.
