Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

“There’s too much dark at night,” claims Bunny to Papa one evening, so together they search their woodland community for the perfect illumination. The moon is too bright, fireflies too twinkly, and a streetlight too tall, but upon returning home, Mama suggests her old night-light (it’s called “little” but it’s almost as big as Bunny), which fills the need perfectly. While the artistic style is similar to Hayes’ Geisel Medal–winning graphic novel Benny and Penny in the Big No-No! (2009), this is a more traditional format with gently drawn and colored bucolic scenes surrounded by nocturnal creatures scurrying around wide margins. Bunny is textually gender-neutral but depicted visually in traditionally girl-centric flowery pajamas, and Hayes seems likewise vague regarding how often he intends to rhyme, yet the story’s soothing structure, the bunny’s recognizable hesitation to sleep, the comforting conclusion, and the appealing, if somewhat gimmicky, glow-in-the-dark spots on each page (if it’s light enough to read, it’s too bright to see them) are all just right to help any youngster sleep tight. Preschool-Kindergarten. --Andrew Medlar

The story isn't spectacular but it is sweet and little ones will want to read this one time and again just to see the luminous bits in each cozy illustration. Over the years, I've had my own experiences with weak glow-in-the-dark books where the child and I had to get uncomfortable in the bathroom, hold the book directly up to the bright lights and count to thirty before plunging ourselves into near total darkness in order to see the glow-y parts. But this little book glimmers cheerfully with just a pass of a flashlight in a semi-darkened bedroom.

Love how the artwork captures the quaint woodlands where the characters live. My 5 yr. old loved reading by flashlight- and really enjoyed the story. There were only a few things that actually glowed on each page, but a charming book nonetheless.

I agree with the previous reviewer - the story isn't anything too special, but its cute enough. What my son and I really love about this book is the glow in the dark. The glow is SO bright and doesn't take more than 3 seconds to charge. Curl up with a flash light and read each page, than turn out the light and prepared to be amazed :)
