Book Description

When a mysterious explosion destroys an airship, four strangers come together to uncover a vast conspiracy to plunge the nation of Marrakesh into a devastating war.

Taziri Ohana, inventor of the experimental airship Halcyon, leads the investigation across the length of the country. With the aid of a brutal detective, a holy swordsman, and an exiled princess, she discovers clandestine meetings, deadly beasts, horrific experiments, and bizarre machines that reveal a far-reaching plot against the royal family and her countrymen.

With hired killers lurking in every shadow and worker riots erupting on every street corner, Taziri learns to defend herself as only an engineer can - with her inventions. But despite all her efforts, her country's only hope for peace may be her beloved airship Halcyon plummeting out of the burning sky.

Book 2: The Broken Sword
Book 3: The Bound Soul

Editorial Reviews

Review

"A masterful weave of multiple story lines...Lewis's characters leap off the page to run and jump through the imagination, the dialogue is tight, fast, real and peppered with witticism."
--Allan Douglas, The Write Stuff

"Lewis gives us a well woven story with brilliant characters and non-stop adventure. I found the story so well written and entertaining that I flew through it...and I want the next novel immediately!"
--Battlin Jack, As the Bookworm Turns

5.0 out of 5 stars Imaginative fantasy - a great read! February 15, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I've liked the idea of 'steampunk' historical fantasy settings for a while but not really got around to reading anything from that sort of genre but this, with its steam-powered airships, certainly counts and I really enjoyed it.

Set against the imaginative backdrop of a world where the northern hemisphere never really emerged from the last ice age, Taziri Ohana flies her airship in the skies above Marrakesh. After a huge explosion destroys the airfield, she is the only pilot left. She and marshal Syfax Zidane discover this is only a part of a huge conspiracy aiming to take down the government.

A great mix of intrigue, action and adventure. I'm already looking forward to more in the series.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Burning Sky April 16, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Heralded as a work of alternate fiction, this book looks at an Earth which has never recovered from the ice age. Consequently, political powers and religious beliefs are turned up-side down. Taken from the point-of-view of multiple characters, this story follows Taziri, a pilot and marshals as they chase killers across land and sea. Together, they unravel and foil a vast conspiracy against the Queen. I would have liked a map at the beginning of the book so that I could more easily picture the areas that the characters were traveling through. However, overall I thought the book was well written and the characters were interesting and dynamic.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read! April 6, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I had never heard of "Steampunk" before, but if this book is representative of the genre, I am ready for more!

It took me a while to get into the book as new characters and events are introduced quite rapidly, and I agree that a map would have been handy, but I was hooked.

I look forward to the next instalment.
