Editorial Reviews

The Burnt Part Boys played off-Broadway in the spring of 2010 at Playwrights Horizons in a co-production with the Vineyard Theater. It was nominated for two 2011 Lucille Lortel Awards (Best Musical; Best Featured Actor, Noah Galvin), a Drama Desk Award for Best Orchestrations (Bruce Coughlin), & a 2011 Off-Broadway Alliance Award for Best Musical. The 18 track cast album preserves the elegiac pop/folk/bluegrass score by Chris Miller (music) and Nathan Tysen (Lyrics). The lavishly packaged cd comes with a 28 page booklet containing the complete lyrics, a synopsis, and production photos.

I was fascinated by the Burnt Part Boys: a show that I didn't get the chance to see but was oddly intrigued by. I was looking forward to getting the soundtrack and I ultimately can't say I'm disappointed.

A lot of people were put off by the show's unconventional style, but I find it really relaxing and refreshing. It's a great mix of Broadway, bluegrass, and country music. The only issue for me is that, aside from a few, most of the songs really aren't memorable and sort of all blend together. On the other hand, there are a few exceptions. "The Climbing Song," which also has a pretty long reprise, is incredibly catchy and has great harmony. I'm going to have the, "Lift me up!" part stuck in my head for awhile. Another one I loved was "Disappear," sung beautifully by Sean Askin. Great lyrics and really heartfelt. I love songs that cut underneath the skin of the characters and communicate their plight. Other gems include, "Eight Hours," "Family Tree," "Man I Never Knew," and, "Little Toy Compass."

Most of the other songs, unfortunately, are pretty forgettable. They're perfectly catchy, but perhaps they're only catchy because they sound similar to songs we've heard on the radio hundreds of times before. "Davey Crockett," "Bowie's Lament," "Countdown," and, "I Made That," all fell into this category for me. If all the songs in this show were as good as, "Disappear," or, "The Climbing Song," it would have been phenomenal. Unfortunately, they're not.

All in all though, The Burnt Part Boys has a flawed but excellent soundtrack. I'd definitely check it out, or at least sample some of the songs on Itunes.

Not terribly interesting to listen to. A lot of the songs start to sound the same over time. Perhaps the score works better in performance. Not a cd I will be listening to again anytime soon.

A couple of the songs are truly beautiful; I like this because it's a different kind of musical. Recommend it.
