A very well written and detailed look at the archaeology and history of the Burren and Aran Islands. If the author doesn't know the answer, rational explainations are given. No wild conjecture or agenda is present in the writing. The author has spent much time in the area doing research and excavation in the region and detailed maps and drawings are given. A hightly suggested resource while reading this book are cartographer Tim Robinson's Burren Map and the Ordnance Survey maps of the region (51, 52, 57, 58).

I was amazed when I started reading this book. It is one of the best archaeology books of a region I have ever seen. Let me qualify that, I am in the process of finishing up a degree in archaeology and most of the texts for the undergrad and masters program do not even come close to containing the quality of writing and examples that this book does. It is written to be useful to anyone who has an interest in the area from the novice to at least MA level. Several of the examples in the text were discussed in an Irish Studies class at NUI, Galway - and I wish I had found this earlier to flesh out the class work. I would recommend this if you want to learn more about Irish archaeology or if you plan on doing some sightseeing in the area.

Excellent, excellent, excellent. Very easy to read and understand. Informative and clear. I am not an archaeology major but could immediately understand this as opposed to other archaeology texts assigned.
