More About the Author

Michael F. Kay writes and speaks about the intersection of money and realizing your most closely held dreams for yourself and your family. He publishes regularly in Psychology Today and Forbes and writes a monthly column for financial advisors in Advisorbiz.com

He is a Financial Life Planner, Certified Financial Planner, CPA and President of Financial Focus, a Registered Investment Advisory firm.

Inspired by studying with life planning pioneers Carol Anderson (Money Quotient) and George Kinder (The Kinder Institute of Life Planning), Michael explored and tested new methodologies and created a paradigm shift in his own practice. He went on to write "The Business of Life: An Inside-out Approach to Building A More Successful Financial Planning Practice" to advise other financial planners on expanding their practices.

He is a frequent speaker at financial planning industry events and serves as President of The Money Quotient Advisory Board.

Micheal's voice of compassion is reflected in his writing, as he tells his story, and shares his experiences in helping his clients. Michael has many gifts, one of which is helping people crystallize their vision, and breaking it down into small, achievable steps. He's helped me for many years do just that.
He is now passing that gift on to us by sharing his experience, systems and style in his book.
As advisors, we all know that there are many processes and systems out there that offer ways to improve our business, our life, and the lives of our clients. The bigger challenge is to take what we learn, and bring it back into our business and our life, and implement it sucessfully. Michael gives you a solid foundation to do just that.
Helping people become accountable for their financial life is one thing, but helping them learn that their personal life and their financial life are intertwined is another. Michael does that beautifully for his clients.
For advisors, who want to stop selling, and start advising, read Michael's book.

A powerful book for financial advisors who long for something more ... both for their clients and themselves! Author Michael Kay is right on the money, and Bob Veres offers great insights in the Foreward. This is both an inspiring book ... and a "how-to" practical book. Michael Kay, CFP, is a wonderful storyteller!

I highly recommend this book to financial planners who are interested in providing deeper meaning to their work with their clients. Having met Michael and seen him action, I can tell that he truly believes in putting clients first. Best yet is that in this book, Michael has shared with advisors how to enhance the services that they provide their clients so that their businesses (and their lives) can be better. He shares his business model of incorporating financial life planning into the services that he provides his financial planning and investment management clients. I already am incorporating a number of his ideas and suggestions into my own financial planning practice. Thank you, Michael, for sharing your wisdom with the rest of us!

Financial Life Planning is a holistic practice that puts the clients' interests first and focuses on increasing their sense of financial well-being and life satisfaction. FLP increases clients' (and therefore their advisor's) understanding of client habits and attitudes that will facilitate client financial and life goals and support successful life transitions.

Michael Kay has not only done something many financial advisors have only thought about, or only talk about, he has also told the rest of the world how to do it, too. If you are not already persuaded that advising should embrace more than purely financial questions, then the early chapters of The Business of Life will help focus you on why this makes sense. And if you are already persuaded, then the middle and later chapters will tell you pretty much step by step how you can revise your own practice to emulate some, if not all, of what Kay has done.

He also presents two sample cases, and follows them through the process: one couple that tunes in right away and is highly cooperative, and the other couple which stumbles and sometimes fails. This is smart and very helpful. We learn how the process should work under ideal circumstances but also in difficult ones.

Although I was already sold on the overall concept, Kay has taught me a lot about how this kind of advisory work should be conducted in real life, and I am grateful for the lessons.

I recommend five books for any financial planner who wants to take their practice into the 21st century. Michael Kay's book is on that short list. My advice to you is not only to buy The Business of Life, but read it and then put Michael's advice into practice! You will enhance your quality of life, add sustainability and profitability to your practice, and endear yourself to your clients for life.

The other books on my short list for financial life planners that I recommend you also read are (full disclosure, one of them I co-authored):

Financial Planning: The Next Step: A Practical Approach to Merging Your Clients' Money with Their Lives
The New Financial Advisor: Strategies for Successful Family Wealth Management
Lighting the Torch: The Kinder Method(TM) of Life Planning
Facilitating Financial Health: Tools for Financial Planners, Coaches, and Therapists

On March, 9, 2011, Michael Kay, President of Financial Focus, LLC, gave a great webinar for members of the RIA Central community. He discussed how to avoid letting your business run your life, using stories from his own direct experience as a financial planning practitioner to provide an inspirational example. His advice was very well received. His new book, The Business of Life, offers sage advice for advisors who want to build a more successful practice. Michael explains in his book that some advisors would benefit from an approach that allows an understanding of clients, and a self-awareness, from the inside out. As a 35-year industry veteran myself (in publishing and communications)I nominate Michael's book as one of my Top Ten must-reads for any financial advisor or wealth manager who needs inspiration and meaningful personal examples of how to find more purpose in their practices and in their lives. Don't miss the story of Dr. and Mrs. T.
