Book Description

October 1, 2011 5 - 7 years

Ernestine is in over her head. Monday through Sunday, Ernestine’s week is packed with after-school lessons—tuba, knitting, sculpting, water ballet, yoga, yodeling, and karate. Overwhelmed and exhausted, Ernestine decides to take matters into her own hands and heads off to the park with her Nanny where she builds a fort, watches the clouds, and plays all kinds of unstructured and imaginative games. But when a teacher calls Ernestine's mom to report that she has not shown up for yodeling, her parents search everywhere until at last they hear their daughter's laughter coming from the park. Ernestine tells her parents what a wonderful afternoon she's had, and explains her plight, asking, "I like my lessons, but can't I stop some of them?" This saga hilariously captures the dilemma of the modern-day over-scheduled child in riotous color and absurd extremes. A delightful heroine, Ernestine will be sure to put “play” back on everyone’s agenda, demonstrating that in today’s overscheduled world, everyone needs the joy of play and the simple wonders of childhood.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This book is a joyful and funny reminder to kids and parents alike about the importance and power of play. . . . Our children will all be happier and healthier if we lessen all those lessons and get out to play." —Darell Hammond, CEO and cofounder of KaBOOM!

"Illustrations by Beaky . . . a helter-skelter of varying perspectives, diagonal lines, falling objects, and crowded calendars sporting Post-It notes all contribute to the frantic mood of the story. . . . More than enough amusing examples of adult folly in both text and illustration." —Bayviews (February 2012)

"One day overscheduled Ernestine bails on her lessons to do something outrageous: play. The book has a capital 'M' message but also lots of heart. Plus, there's amusement in Lodding's text . . . and in Beaky's acrylics." —The Horn Book (January 2012)

"Beautiful acrylic illustrations in vibrant colors show the child's myriad activities and frenzied lifestyle. Taking time to play without a schedule is one of the overarching themes here, but Ernestine seems to realize this all along." —School Library Journal (December 1, 2011)

"A paean to play, especially for kids. . . . The vibrant, colorful illustrations help lift each page of spunky narration. The Busy Life of Ernestine Buckmeister will appeal to overachieving kids of all ages, or 4-8." —www.midwestbookreview.com (December 2011)

"Lodding teaches an important lesson . . . without being didactic, but with charming characters and happenings. The brilliant illustrations of Suzanne Beaky are an absolute treat, full of fun and telling details in bright colors. They match the story perfectly. This is a book parents and children alike will enjoy over and over again." —www.CityBookReview.com (January 2012)

"After juggling a different activity each day of her overscheduled life, Ernestine breaks free for a day of playing at the park, reminding kids and adults alike about the importance of including fun and simple childhood wonder on every agenda." —Metro Family Magazine (March 2012)

"The illustrator has created beautiful and detailed artwork that really helps emphasize Ernestine and her crazy life. The images are creative and funny. Children . . . will delight in the moral of the story: Sometimes a kid just needs to have time to play, have fun, and exercise only the imagination." —www.NYJournalOfBooks.com

More About the Author

Linda Ravin Lodding is the author of "The Busy Life of Ernestine Buckmeister" (illustrated by Suzanne Beaky, Flashlight Press, 2011) and the upcoming "Hold That Thought, Milton!" (illustrated by Ross Collins) and "Oskar's Perfect Present" (illustrated by Alison Jay) both from Gullane Children's Books, London.

Linda is originally from New York, but has spent the past 15 years in Sweden, Austria and now The Netherlands. Today she lives in a one-windmill with her wonderful husband and daughter (who is, at times, as busy as Ernestine) and their sometimes-dog Nino (who speaks Dutch, Swedish, Spanish and a smattering of English).

With the publication of "The Busy Life of Ernestine Buckmeister" Linda has realized her dream to become a published children's book author - a dream that started to take shape 13 years ago when her own daughter was born and Linda was reunited with her favorite children's books. Some of the authors that Linda counts among her favorites are Judy Blume, E.L. Koningsberg, Madeline L'Engle and the author of the "B is for Betsy" books whose name Linda has ashamedly forgotten.

In "The Busy Life of Enrnestine Buckmeister", young Ernestine's week is chock-a-block with classes. Water ballet with Mrs. Goldfisher. Yodeling with Little Old Lady Hoo. Yoga with Guru Prakesh Pretzel. Tuba with Mr. Oompah! Ernestine is the poster girl for today's over-scheduled child. But Ernestine is about to do something no Buckmeister has ever done before. PLAY!

Like her character Ernestine, Linda has taken lots of classes - everything from Archery, Chinese Cooking, Figure Skating, Fencing, Clogging (that has nothing to do with shower drains), to Zumba. She loves dreaming up stories, biking along the canals, taking photos, doing pottery, traipsing through quaint towns, playing the flute...and sometimes just playing.

Linda graduated from Barnard College, Columbia University (New York) and has an MBA from New York University's Stern School of Business. When Linda isn't writing, she's usually working for the United Nations as a media and public information specialist - or eating heavily frosted cupcakes.

I just had the delight of reading The Busy Life of Ernestine Buckmeister by Linda Ravin Lodding, and illustrated by Suzanne Beaky. It's a beautiful picture book with bright, bold illustrations and clever text. It addresses the issue of over commitment in a head-on fashion, but it's comical tone makes for a great character-building book. I giggled aloud when I read the character's names to my 5-year old daughter - Clay Lumpkin teaches a sculpting class, Pearl Stitchem teaches knitting, and my favorite was thte karate instructor Grand Master Hi Ya.

Like so many parents I know, Ernestine Buckmeister's parents have her best interests in mind when they fill her calendar full of fun, engaging and active after school fun - helping her live life to the fullest. But Ernestine's one silent wish is to just stay home to play. She longs to jump on the trampoline, giddy-up like a cowboy and bounce a ball. The only problem is that her schedule allows no time for such frolicking.

One day Ernestine bucks the calendar, to pursue her own day of fun. She and her nanny have the best day ever, wandering through the park imagining shapes in the clouds, building forts and making daisy crowns. When her parents finally catch up with her, Ernestine respectfully and bravely admits her desire to slow down and have time to be a kid without following the calendar. She helps the whole family discover how to make every moment count by discovering life without regimenting every minute of life.

This book is packed full of character lessons around goal-setting, communication, integrity, social skills, time management, planning, decision-making, and family relationships. It's a great tool for teachers, counselors, librarians and parents.
