The only other review of this book here on Amazon, is simply a complaint about the condition of a dustcover on an old copy, which is not a review of the book, but simply a complaint about a particular seller, and that is a complaint that should be addressed elsewhere. This is an absolute gem of a book. It not only covers the history of the Pekingese breed, but connects and juxtaposes the biographies of Queen Victoria with her counterpart in China, Empress Tzu-hsi, as well as reviewing the opium wars and shows how the Pekingese breed was affected by all of these things. I originally bought this book to learn more about the history of the Pekingese. But just like many things in life in life, what started off seeming like one simple subject - a dog breed - turned into a subject most infinite in complexity, interest and feeling. All because of a very well written book.

I was very disappointed with this particular book that I received. The dust cover is torn badly and the book itself looks very old. I think it is probably intact. I don't see pages missing or torn. I suppose it was a decision on the part of the seller, whether to send a torn dust cover or none at all. I guess I prefer the torn cover. I will attempt to tape it together. It will never look good, too much of the cover is simply not there. I wish it looked like this picture.
