Book Description

October 20, 2010
THE COPPER-HANDLES AFFAIR: The Great San Francisco Earthquake, Fire and Bank Heist, begins with the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and a simple opportunistic bank robbery, plunging John Law Copper, accidental thief, and Frederick W. Handles, the pursuing policeman, into the greater game of big money power politics and civic corruption on the Ragtime U. S. Pacific Coast. The chase takes them through the vanished garden world of northern California to the dangerous shanghai town of Portland, Oregon. Resonates with common human values that time and evolution have not yet ground out of us. Includes 48 b&w line drawings and two maps.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it. February 9, 2013
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This was a rollicking good read. I admit to being somewhat surprised by that, since I bought the book on a whim after becoming familiar with and admiring the author's artwork. I didn't really know what to expect, but I was soon charmed by not just the story, but by the excellent writing. The two main characters, the "hero" cop and the "villain" robber are drawn so distinctly, yet I couldn't help but be sympathetic to both. The setting, the characters, the adventure...all good stuff; this is a unique novel that I am proud to have in my library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Legry Nails It January 26, 2013
By Lily
Format:Paperback
The book is long but that turns out to be a good thing. It does such a good job of pulling you into the time and story that it is disappointing to discover you have reached the last page. The author does a masterful job of creating the early 1900's world of California and Oregon. The research is solid. He uses it well such that the settings and historical context are authentic. Legry has given the reader a bonus gift in the form of accurate and exquisite line drawings. A great talent!
