Editorial Reviews

One of the founding members of female super group Celtic Woman, Meav returns to her musical origins with The Calling - 12 tracks of newly written songs, folk ballads and fresh interpretations of timeless classics. Produced and co-written by the Grammy award-winning producer Craig Leon, responsible for iconic records by Blondie, Talking Heads, Ramones and Pavarotti amongst others, The Calling, a contemporary pop treatment of new songs and folk classics from Ireland, England, Scotland, Brittany, Galicia and America, showcases Meav's crystal clear voice, elegantly fusing her classical training with her folk roots.

Fans of former Celtic Woman and now solo artist Méav Ní Mhaolchatha will be thrilled to have her latest album, The Calling! I certainly am! Her voice has lost none of the angelic appeal we remember from her prior offerings and from her tour appearances throughout the world with Celtic Woman!

If you are unfamiliar with Méav, you will find no better sample of her heavenly vocal talents than through this offering! An as you can see from the cover, she is as beautiful as ever!

Hopefully, the issuance of this album will be followed by a tour by which we may see its performance live!

THE CALLING: MEAV'S LOVELY MASTERPIECE

We have received the most beautiful CD we have ever heard..."THE CALLING" by Méav Ni Mhaolchatha of Dublin, Ireland. Our family has listened to each of the songs over and over and just cannot hear them enough. Each of us has our favorite...
Along with her music producer, Mr. Craig Leon, Méav has given us true beauty in song.
There are 12 beautiful songs on "THE CALLING"...

"The Songline to Home" is truly my favorite...this song just brings me to tears. Méav promises me that no matter what may happen in my life..where I may be..what is going on, she will be my Songline to Home and I'll never be alone...she truly sings this song to me...and she will sing it to any of you who listen to it. It is beautiful. And, I must mention here that Méav wrote the words to this hauntingly beautiful song. It tells you the love that Méav shares with all who hear her songs.
And, Méav will always be your Songline to Home.

"Shenandoah" has always been one of my favorite of all songs...but I was truly blown away with Méav's version of this song...it is lovely. This is the favorite of all here in our home. To hear Méav sing the intertwining harmonies is just amazing and shows her ability to use her gorgeous voice in so many many ways...no wonder Méav was the favorite in the singing group Celtic Woman. We heard this over and over...how dearly everyone loved to hear Méav sing and how much she was missed when she left the group to take her own solo journey and enjoy caring for her family. "Shenandoah" is well worth your buying this album all on it's own.

I've fallen in love with Méav's song "Glimmering Girl"...it is beautiful!! And...

Just got her cd today, and I am already listening to it for the third time in a row.

This, her fouth solo-album (unless you count Méav with Aununa: Celtic Dreams), is an excellent mix of both traditional and new songs. I really liked her new song 'The Calling' after which the album is named, and her new song 'The Songline To Home' almost brought me to tears. Her interpretation of 'Black Is The Colour' is really quite beautiful, and vastly different from Lisa Lambe's version from the Celtic Woman album 'Believe' ( Believe ).

Overall this cd with its relaxing music is highly recommendable. And I hope we don't have to wait to long for her next album.

PS: 'Glasgow's Burning', another of her new songs is a good one, which I heard for the first time on another cd ( Divinas: Live At Chambord Castle ) and DVD (and recently aired on PBS) along with two other songs found on this album. You may wish to check it out, the cd is great (because Meav is on it :-) ) and the other two artists with excellent voices.

Review of Meav's CD "The Calling".
When I first heard a clip of this new CD, I was excited about it. The single on YouTube "The Calling" was fresh and catching. It was rhythmic, easy to listen to and focused. It gave me a sense of what was coming on the CD. I received the CD on a Monday afternoon but did not listen to it until I was driving to work on Tuesday. This way, I could give it my full attention. I had reviewed the playlist and saw three songs that I knew very well. One song was a classic that I knew from my college days and hadThe Calling not heard anyone sing well since the original artist released it. One song was from my high school days remembered by me best in music and the last from a musical play that I loved. I was amazed at the clarity of the first number on the CD ("The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face"). It was not rushed, a flaw often done by others in this number and the interpretation was spot on. You can hear the yearning and love sung throughout the entire number. The second a well-known song (Black is the Colour) I first heard when we played it in our band while I was in high school. Then our varsity choir accompanied us. Since, I have heard many attempts to capture the essence of this song. Only two I have heard in the last few years accomplished this. One is on this CD. Meav has taken this to a new level making it her own in the process. The last is from a movie that I saw both as a musical and as a drama (Shenandoah). The musical is actually little known except for this title song, but I love the music. We performed it when I worked with summer stock during college. Meav captures the strong sense of land, family and home that the song portrays. It is a powerful number.
