About the Author

Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde (16 October 1854 - 30 November 1900) was an Irish playwright, poet and author of numerous short stories and one novel. Known for his biting wit, he became one of the most successful playwrights of the late Victorian era in London, and one of the greatest "celebrities" of his day. Several of his plays continue to be widely performed, especially The Importance of Being Earnest. As the result of a widely covered series of trials, Wilde suffered a dramatic downfall and was imprisoned for two years' hard labour after being convicted of homosexual relationships, described as "gross indecency" with other men. After Wilde was released from prison he set sail for Dieppe by the night ferry, never to return to Ireland or Britain.

It most gratifying to read the story after suffering the distortions Holly has perpetrated with their versions.
I recommend it for all who enjoy dry wit and just a little spookiness in a story which can be read in one sitting.

The ghost of Canterville is an admirable exercise of superb erudition and distinguished employment of the main codes of the genre. Filled of sharp irony, relentless reminiscence of by gone days, when the ghosts disturbed the quietness of the village as well as the origin of many legends of horror which still nestle and persist in the collective unconscious (Loch Ness, for instance).

These underground stories shaped and forged the inspiration of Lovecraft, Shelley, Stevenson, Kafka and overseas Poe and Quiroga who knew to dig and explore those sinister labyrinths of the human soul.

But the coup of grace of this brief novel is the cynical treatment given by Poe around the presence of the ancestral figure when Hiram Otis decides to buy the castle.

The underneath message deals with an ancestral archetype. The miscommunication of this missed anima, who needs to rest in peace after so many centuries contrasts with the impossibility to reach the goal to scare and frighten his new victims, who come from the North American universe absolutely divergent with these ancestral customs.

Wilde displays a compete arsenal of brilliant observations, with is well known verbal elegance and good manners, distilling acidic irony which impress the novel of genial from start to finish.

One of the most emblematic literary works of this unforgettable genius.

I purchased this for my grandaughters and found it more appropriate for teens/adults. I enjoyed reading it. I purchased the movie version for the younger family members.
