Editorial Reviews

Gene Vincent was an artist of a hugely prolific nature who came to define rockabilly as a musical genre, and was an enormous inspiration for a generation of musicians and performers. Presented here is this maverick performer's complete Capitol output from the 1950s and early 1960s, including more than 120 cuts from seven albums, numerous 45s, plus live rarities, EP only tracks and a few surprises for good measure. This delightful compilation offers an unrivalled retrospective of the genius but troubled talent that was Gene Vincent.

Format: Audio CD
Gene Vincent was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1998, some 21 years after his tragic death at age 36 from an ulcer haemorrhage on October 12, 1971. In the final analysis his being so honoured was based more upon his significant influence on other R&R stars to follow - e.g., mostly upon elements of the 1964 British Invasion - than his catalogue of hit singles, whyich amounted to all of five in 1956/57, all for Capitol Records. Indeed, he was considerably more popular in the U.K. than he ever was in the United States, where he was born Vincent Eugene Craddock in Norfolk, Virginia on February 11, 1935.

Like Columbia, Capitol was a bit slow to embrace the "upstart" genre labelled Rock `N' Roll by DJ Alan Freed, and only after Elvis started hogging the spotlight for RCA Victor did they turn to the then 21-year-old Vincent after hearing a demo of a song he had written and performed on Norfolk radio early in 1956. Rushed to re-record the tune, Be-Bop-A-Lula, at the Nashville studios of Owen Bradley on May 4 were Gene, lead guitarist Cliff Gallup, rhythm guitarist Willie Williams, string bass player Jack Neal, and drummer Dickie Harrell (who is heard screaming on the final cut since he wanted to make sure his folks could hear him on a record), who would become The Blue Caps.

Since Elvis was making a habit of producing two-sided hits, Capitol was hoping for the same with Woman Love as the flip of Capitol 3450, but only the A-side charted, although they couldn't have been too disappointed since it entered all three main charts, hitting # 7 Pop Top 100, # 8 R&B, and # 5 Country in June/July 1956. But that turned out to be a tough act to follow, and so nothing else handed to him by Capitol came close.

This is the best compilation of all those first releases. It is possible to hear the raw sexuality of Vincent's voice and style, supported by the blue caps. I do not think these hits were ever surpassed by later released versions. The blue caps spontaneous musical skills and voice outbreaks just set of Vincent's performance and give these rockabilly hits an uncontrived freshness. Full of the fifties enthusiasm for life and fun that used to scare my parents to death

This is the Gene Vincent package I was waiting for. I was thinking about getting the Bear Family set, but this one has all of the Capitol material for much less. Totally recommended.

I disagree that there are many weak tracks on these disks. No way! Some great stuff here. And all the Cliff Gallup performances in one place. Buy it!
